Dynotuning VS. Street/track tuning.

Which is more beneficial? And safer for a daily driven street car. Tell me why.

giving a completely safe area, road tuning will likely be more benficial because that will give real world airflow across the intercooler, fuel situations, actual engine stress, etc. the problem is that road/track tuning is much more time consuming. Its easier to let someone who knows what they are doing sit at a dyno with all of the sensors they need get your car very close than it is to pay them to track tune things. Start on the dyno to get things close and safe, then fine tune it from all of the datalogging you should be doing while racing and driving.

I am a believer to tune the car for its purpose. DD car tune on the road, Drag car on the strip and track car on the track. IMO the only dyno I would actually "tune" my car would be a load bearing dyno(mustang) Even then it will be close but you can try all you want you will not simulate real world airflow. I am by no means an expert just my 2 cents

The fact that a road tune is done under the real conditions of driving gives it the edge over dyno tuning. In my opinion, that is

dynos are for showing off, not tuning.... granted you cant get a ticket on a dyno....

when i do dynotune i always touch it up on the street after, safer and better to double check

Normally I'd say that the above is really a stupid thing to say but given the "records" threads of late one might think that dynos were meant to produce forum threads and not tuned cars.

Both methods are good. They both have strong points. This is coming from a dyno owner.

dynos are awesome tools, they take alot of time and hassle out of the tuning equation. not to mention its a much safer way to tune.

i strongly feel that cars should still be tested and logged on the street, to verify real world loading and airflow. Personally i will always prefer street tuning because its cheap. but if i could afford a dyno time - you can bet i would use it, i would rather spend money on more mods.

Our lastest achiever has just run 11.7 on 93 octane from TTP-Engineering street tuning. We put the car on the dyno afterwards and had a difficult time finding any additional power.

Street tune is excellent but quite risky having to do 3rd and 4th gear pulls on the highway... Other than that i think street tune can give a more realistic and precise tune that on the dyno...

I think a combo if the two is even better...

Ideally, dyno tune first allows you to do things quickly and repeatedly, so you can see exactly what your changes did. But of course, you can't accurately simulate the airflow (well, unless you're an F1 team with a rolling floor in a massive windtunnel). A dyno tune should get you about 90-95% of where you need to be. Then take it to a 'road course' to do any necessary fine tuning.

Street tune is better...I wouldnt risk doing a 3rd gear run because of my beautiful clean driving record :P

IF the tuner know WTF he's doing, he should be to tune on the dyno or off the dyno period. It's not like it's safe to tune an 500whp++ evo on the street. Unlesss you're in redneck country where you got miles and miles of free straight road.

Street tuning will always be better on the car than just tuning on a dyno. Dyno is good for figuring out problems and getting a baseline. Street tuning accounts for real loads real temps, stop and go. You cant get the same effects on a dyno.

Thank you, if a car is fast on the street thats what counts, not how much power. Peak numbers dont matter, its the curve and average power. Dynos are for selling parts.

I think they should be used more for high hp cars and r&d... a 350whp car shouldnt be on a dyno

Cheers!
