Experience with ball-type injectors vs Densos

Ball-type injectors offer benefits over disc injectors on paper (lighter reciprocating mass which should allow lower minimum on-times, and higher duty before static... ). I'm curious how this translates into real-world use.

Does anyone have direct experience with using ball-type injectors (FIC) vs, say, Densos of similar flow rate? Do theoretical advantages of ball-type injectors materialize in the real world?

I am keen to have as wide a dynamic range as possible, in order to run the smallest injector possible that still meets my flow needs (with a bit of margin).

The theoretical advantages do materialize, from latency settings to IDC at WOT.

Of equal importance is the fact that both disc and ball and seat types are much less affected by deposits, and give superior service life and reduced incidence of failure. It's worth having anything but a pintle type for peace of mind alone.

Ted, what are your on-times (or latency values) at idle, and at what RPM do you idle (realizing the impact of cam timing / profle, et al)? Are they materially better than Densos of equivalent flow rate?

Well . . . . it's not a good time to ask that question, as I am presently undertaking a complete overhaul of my tuning situation, and latency changes are a part of it.

However, I might offer that I've been running around with 850cc/min ball-type (Delphi) in my car, running 900rpm idle without any idling or low speed tractability issues, and seeing a solid 28 mpg in steady freeway 75-80mph. That may or may not be useful to you.

Thanks, the idle info does help. A 900 rpm idle on 850s is pretty solid. Are you driving them through the stock resistor pack or using some aftermarket controller with low-impedance drivers? (I see XEDE/flash in your sig but I know how these can get out of date).

I'm unclear how the injectors would contribute to fuel economy... unless they are requiring a lot less current to operate, which would reduce your alternator load. Seems unlikely though.

I'm using the factory resistor pack. Even popular standalone options retain it, and therefore it appears to work well enough.

The fuel economy blurb is just to illustrate that the injectors react quickly enough to deliver accurate fuel metering at light throttle, closed loop settings.

The good news for you in all of this is that you can be less calculating in your injector sizing, and just select a size that is comfortable for your setup - without any worries whatsoever.

With the stock ecu the ball type injector is a huge advantage in driveability they just work a lot better
