Noise from cone filter

Looking for first hand experience for loudness with a cone filter such as the apexi or buschur racing filter?

I am looking to create a quiet 3in turbo-back exhaust using magnaflow muffler and resonators but I am worried with the addition of the cone filter it will make things loud and draw unwanted attention from police and/or makes things much louder in the cabin for a passenger and I over long trips. (I'd like to keep the car sounding as stock inside and out as much as possible)

I've read as many threads as I can stand and I believe the cone filter does provide a benefit from what I've read even with a lightly modded IX and if I can get a better performing cone filter for about the same price as a panel drop-in, but it doesn't wake the dead, I'd like to go that route.

Thoughts?

If you are trying to keep your car quiet run a drop-in filter with a 3" turboback with resonated testpipe and a large muffler (for example the BR Magnaflow catback with a bullet muffler in the testpipe). A cone filter will add a lot of noise, mainly upon acceleration (even light acceleration).

Cone filters are only loud when the turbo starts to spool. RIGHT before boost, you'll hear a sucking sound, but when in vaccum just crusing, there is no sound difference.

thx S2kracka, that seems to be the conventional wisdom.

MitsuJDM- do u have any in cabin sounds clips or know of anyone else who has them? Loud is different for everyone I assume.

if you get a plastic or slilcone intake pipe then that will quiet it a little more than a aluminum pipe would. i dont know how much though. i only hear my turbo when i get on it

Your best bet is to find some local Evo's in your area and just ask those guys for rides so you can hear what different setups sound like. Online sound clips don't really show much since volume and sensitivity vary so greatly.

Definately stick with a drop in. The open element filters only make power on the dyno.

It would be silly to replace the stock box with something that sucks in hot engine bay temps and makes a bunch of noise. The stock air box is feed from I high pressure ram air style snorkle and works better than conical filters up to 50lbs of air flow. My BR intake made more power on a dyno with the hood open but at the track it cost me power. The stock air box fed with 100mph cool air is much better than an open filter sucking in hot engine bay temps. Even if you keep the snorkle its still sucking in hot air.

I don't want to get in a discussion on panel vs. cone, but from my research on tests done by various members of EVOM, I believe a cone filter will outperform a panel filter. This is the summary of what I've read:

Cone filter:
-More Flow
-Hotter intake Charge

Panel Filter:
-Less Flow
-Colder Intake Charge

The question to me is....w/ stock turbo is the turbo 'wanting' to suck more air in, if it can get it? If so, then a cone filter would be best. If the stock turbo is 'fine' with the flow of the stock airbox then a panel filter would be best w/ colder intake charge.

From what I've read, the temperature of the intake charge doesn't mean as much as you'd think as the turbo compresses the charge (thus heating it up ) b4 it goes into the engine anyway...yes there is a benefit to a colder charge in the first place, but the benefit of increased flow of a cone filter outweighs the colder (less) flow from a panel, even w/ a lightly modified, stock turbo.

I may be wrong...it's very difficult to read through so many posts, test, opinions.

i just installed my apexi filter a few days ago, and i love the new sound. Other posters were right, there is no difference at all when you are out of boost, but when you start to spool up, you can hear a noticeable increase in the sucking/whining sound, and of course the recirc valve is very audible when shifting and letting off while in boost. Ive been driving with my windows down and radio off for about a week so i can hear the turbo hehe.

i have injen intake and it made the turbo louder and you hear it suckin like crazy. I personally like the sound but if you want to stay quiet, a drop in is the best for you
