Heat is why you build heatshields. I built a heat shild and have tubes routing outside air directly AT the come filter.

Here is my set up. 475345 square feet of gold foil everywhere doesn't hurt

As far as being loud, it's not obnoxious, but it's VEY noticable over stock.

^Nice looking. Is that the garage door weather stripping people are using as a "front lip" material to seal against your hood?

When I bought my car it had a K&N Typhoon intake on it, and during spool up the turbo was quite audible, even with the windows rolled up. Once spooled, the exhaust drowned it out though.

It made the infamous sounding Greddy Type S DV VERY AUDIBLE though.

AFAIK, i order of volume/noisiness:
Stock airbox
Stock Airbox w. metal intake pipe
Cone with stock intake hose
Cone with metal intake pipe

FWIW, I'm back to stock airbox, stock filter, and IX metal DV, and still made corrected 293whp, 303wtq on a DJ, with only an MBC and TBE w. test pipe. I AM thinking about going back to a cone though, not so much because I am looking for power gains, as much as my attempts to go back to stock resulted in slightly but annoyinly mismatched model years stock parts, plus it saves some weight, and clear up a ton of space in the engine bay that I like having.

No, it's pipe insulation. Weather stripping would work just as good, if not better.

cone filters are much mouder than stock but they sound great. it only makes noice when your spooling the turbo.

but when compared to how loud most exhaust are for the evo, cone filters not noting and the sound from the cone filter will mostly be over taken by the exhaust even if its a quiter magnaflow exhaust

-More Flow
-Hotter intake Charge

Panel Filter:
-Less Flow
-Colder Intake Charge

The question to me is....w/ stock turbo is the turbo 'wanting' to suck more air in, if it can get it? If so, then a cone filter would be best. If the stock turbo is 'fine' with the flow of the stock airbox then a panel filter would be best w/ colder intake charge.

From what I've read, the temperature of the intake charge doesn't mean as much as you'd think as the turbo compresses the charge (thus heating it up ) b4 it goes into the engine anyway...yes there is a benefit to a colder charge in the first place, but the benefit of increased flow of a cone filter outweighs the colder (less) flow from a panel, even w/ a lightly modified, stock turbo.

I may be wrong...it's very difficult to read through so many posts, test, opinions.
It's not necessarily the temperature of the intake charge that is as important as the density of the air (or oxygen in the air) of the intake charge. Since there's a direct correlation between air temperature and density, it is easiest to assume that colder is better. Give the turbo an oxygen rich environment first, and then allow it to do its job.

Now which filter?

Bringing this back from the dead as my stock air filter is on the way out.

I'm looking for the cone air filter everyone talks about on Ebay. Can someone point me to the correct one?

I think this one is it:

http://tinyurl.com/3psyat

Looks exactly the same as some offered by major retailers, but:

-It does not have the same black gasket (?) as the other filter, but it does have the chrome colored adapter plate.

-I can't find this filter currently on Ebay

-It still costs $40.

Where are the cheap EVO filters on ebay? Here is what I have found thus far:

-Red, rewashable, oiled generic filter w/ no adapter plate:
http://tinyurl.com/5yg4v7

-Blue, rewashable, but no mention of oil w/ adapter plate:
http://tinyurl.com/3khyvo

If u search for "eclipse air filter" u get the same filters.....

Little help on which one to get? thx.

(p.s. when I asked a retailed about cleaning these filters they said they just replace as needed as they are cheap enough. *shrugs*)
