max out stock turbo's support mods? or upgrade to green?

I have an MR, so I'm not trying to find out how much power it takes to break 4th gear. I just want more of the same, i.e. stock spool/ response characteristics, just a bump more power. Plus, I'm doing my best to not just say F-it and be and deviate too far from my savings goals, so let's say that $2000 is all I plan on spending to include install and tune.

For convenience, these prices/ products are taken off of the BR website-

HKS/ Cossie cams: 650
BR valvesprings: 290
ported + coated exh. manifold: 195
ported intake manifold: 75
BR SS fabricated + coated O2 housing: 200

total: $1410

or

send in the stock evo 9 turbo to BR for the green upgrade - 995
780cc injectors - 300

total: 1295

so, max out the stock turbo's supporting mods or gain efficiency with the green? for the sake of discussion, let's assume that i'll only go with one option, or the other, and that it'll stay that way forever.

Wink

I'd rather mix and match for $2000. I'll take the turbo upgrade, the cams w/o the springs and retainers, the injectors and I'd DYI the two manifolds w/o the coating. To each his own.

I'd do the same. Throw on a cheap 02 housing while your at it.

GSC Cams, Dual Valvesprings, PPI Intake/Exhaust porting, Megan O2, 850cc injectors (FIC, 270@Maperformance), and 20G upgrade

You can get that done under 2k.

As for installs. I'd have the cams/valvesprings installed by a shop, but the other stuff is rather simple to install.

Dont get the Green until you have all the supporting mods to really make it shine. The stock EVO9 turbo is great and hard to beat. For the Green to beat the EVO9 stock turbo, you should be maxxing out that stocker.

Without meth, cams will probably gain you more hp than the green...atleast on a 8 anyway. I say go with green + meth, otherwise if you dont want meth right now, just stick with the cams idea.

i just refuse to go with meth, so i get the feeling that i'll be giving up the best characteristic of the 9 turbo (transient response, very quick spool) for not a very meaningful gain in power and loss of response when going with the green, using 93. open to suggestions.

i am open to mix/match recommendations, but i'm still trying to stay below $2000. i'm not sold on any particular cam, juns sound cool but there isn't a lot of gains data posted on them. will the springs be a waste? i just figured that if the head was gonna be off, might as well improve the springs and set the rpm limit at 8000 rpm. though the next question is whether 8000rpm on a stock turbo with cams on 93 is any more productive or just additional stress on the motor. i'm also not sold on porting the manifolds or an O2 housing, but if they're productive, they seem to be sold at a fair price.

the green turbo is around 1800 without supporting mods. If you don't have supporting mods then I would guarantee that you'll be well over 2 grand. That doesn't include tuning. Good luck. If you're going to be running pump gas stay with the 9 turbo. A green will be a waste at stock boost levels/pump gas. I plan on running a green with E85.

haha you linked my thread. why do you refuse to go with meth? at first i was unsure about using meth since my car was a dd, but seeing as how e85 decreases mpg i thought it was a better way to go.

i want the car to be the same car no matter what the conditions. it's also a dd car that does track work, so safety margin is what concerns me the most. i know this sounds alarmist, but in my day job, additional parts are just additional opportunities to fail, so i'm trying to keep my car as cleverusername-proof as possible.

I agree with the OP, meth + road race could lead to disaster, you need to be checking it religiously even more than your brakes and all fluids, it is just too much hassle. Plus, for people that road race, they can just get an extra map for race gas and get race gas from track, which would provide even more power than meth mix.
