Standard grey is fine. Clean both mating surfaces well, 409 does a better job than brake clean at removing the oil film. Apply a bead, let it tack up (silicone needs moisture to set) to where you can just touch it without it sticking to your finger, then install the pan. The amount of time it takes to tack up depends on the humidity and temperature, the colder and less humid it is the longer it takes.

The factory Mitsubishi stuff is what I use, and I highly reccomend it. It's very expensive (about $30 a tube) but is actually well worth the cost, especialy if you are putting an engine together. Especialy for the oil pan and return gasket, which are always prone to leaking even with other types of RTV. It comes in a white tube, and is grey and thick in texture. I don't have a part number off hand, but they usualy have it in stock at any Mitsubishi dealer.

Some years ago I was replacing an intake manifold and gallery cover on an Olds 403. The first time I messed up, things didn't line up right, and i had to pull it apart for a second try. Then I found I was out of RTV. Rather than going to the auto store I used a tube of bath tub caulk. That car is still running today (a 1979 TA) and it doesn't leak (well, at least there).
I'm not advocating the use of bath tub caulk on your pan. I only want to point out that I think surface preparation is more important than what product you use. I had the mating surfaces clean and oil free.
