Transfer Case Whine in 4th & 5th?!!
Im not entirely sure if it is the transfer case, but I have a hunch thats what it is. When I am just driving in 4th and 5th gear and light throttle, I can hear a whirring/ or clicking sound. This sound recently developed about 1000 miles ago and has not gone away, it may have gotten worse. Any ideas what this issue might be? Transfer Case?
Yes, that's the death whine. Call up Shep or visit his website: http://sheptrans.com. He's repairing my t-case as well, and mine was just like yours: worst in 4th and 5th and at light throttle. As long as it does it in multiple gears, then it's not the trans.
Does it happen only in deceleration? If so, mine does it in fifth gear. I posted a thread recently but didn't get much input at all. Someone suggested the output shaft bearing in the transmission, so I looked it up in the service manual but didn't find such a bearing...
Hopefully you get more replies than i did. I still have the problem so I tend to give it gas or take it out of gear. Good luck, let me know if you find out any specifics on the problem or solution.

No it only does it when Im cruising along at light throttle in 4th and 5th. I took it to the dealer and told them that I thought it was my transfer carse and they told me that nothing was wrong with it. But I know something is!

Thanks fortunately I still have warranty left so hopefully Ill get them to take care of it.

I don't mean to thread jack, but I'm sure any answers to my post will still be helpful to the OP.
I'm not sure if I have a Tcase whine problem. Everybodys complaints are opposite of mine. My Tcase whines up to about 35mph, and then road noise and exhaust noise drown it out.
It seems to be louder when the car has not yet reached operating temp on a cold (15-25 degree) morning. Suprisingly, the whine sounds louder with the windows UP, which is odd to me.
The whining is NOT from the Transmission. It is from the Tcase. I know how to decipher the two from one another. I know that some whining is normal, but since it has gotten colder, the Tcase seems to whine a bit more. I'm thinking it's due to the thickness of the fluid, but I could be totally wrong here....
The car is at 69500 miles. I changed the fluids at about 62k with all OEM Mitsubishi fluids and I'm planning on once again changing them this spring (about 71-72k miles). I bought the car used at 61k miles, so I'm not sure how it was treated before me, but according to a Mitsubishi Tech, the car is in amazing shape for the amount of miles.
I drive the car hard at times, but I do not beat on the car (launching / drag racing). I do not daily drive the car either. It sees mostly city / spirited mountain driving, but on the highway there is no whine. It only whines at low speeds. My concern is the whine has gotten slightly louder as the weather has gotten colder. It used to only whine until about 20mph, but now it will whine up to roughly 30-35mph. That is why I'm concerned, because it has gotten louder. Most posts say the whine starts at high speeds and the worse it gets, the lower the speeds are you will hear the sound. My problem seems to be the opposite...
Any suggestions? Any help at all is appriciated

I replaced my six speed with a five speed because of the bad bearing on the output shaft. It is a noticeable whine in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear with light accerlation. If you turn up the radio...you can't hear it.
The dealers don't replace the bearing...since it basically is one molded part on the output shaft. The shaft is like $1200 just for the part....
Be careful on the warranty, if you have any mods like boost control, they can give you a hard time...
