This was my experience:

My car broke a rod at about 62K miles. I was putting out 400hp/400lbs torque on the stock turbo with meth injection. I did run it pretty hard most of the time but when the rod broke I was driving down the expressway at 65mph.

If you want high horsepower you will have to sacrifice low end tq in order to safely remain on the stock bottom end. As others have stated that can be achieved by going with something like a 6262 and supporting mods or different big turbo setup.

If you want on-demand power at low rpms go with a smaller turbo and have less disparity between your hp and tq #s (450/400 for example). In taking this road you won't be able to safely achieve the aforementioned high horsepower (550+) without building the bottom end. Ultimately you need to decide what you prefer, or fork up the cash and build the engine.

As the saying goes...you've got to pay to play.

Hope that helps!

550

i know a couple guys pushin 550 through 6262 turbos on race gas, i'm hoping to hit 550 on a borgwarner 7670, but i would guess that the 6262 setup will be much safer on the bottom end than the 7670 based on spool charecteristics. but i figure if the motor blows it'll be an excuse to buy a new one.

It is my understanding that high torque ends up destroying stock motors well before high hp. Especially when the high torque comes on early in the powerband, it can lead to things breaking.

A local reputable tuner advised me to keep it below 375 TQ (Mustang) for reliability. I'm planning to do around 375TQ/440HP
