Evo OEM Air Filter Replacement.

Greetings,

Let say I believe that the original Cold Air Intake System from Evo IX is the best system for CAI, and I just need to replace the OEM Air Filter because it's dirty and old.

I heard about;
HKS Super Hybrid Filter Mitsubishi EVO 03-05
Perrin Panel Filter Mitsubishi EVO VIII/IX 03-07
Monster Sport Flat Panel Filter EVO VIII/MR/IX

www.vividracing.com has large choices for replacement filters.

Any suggestions for brand that I can trust and count on? I heard about K&N gimmicks and will not stick to it at anytime.

Thank you for the opinions.

I had the HKS drop in for a while. Its a dry filter and its cheap.

Youll have to replace it every once in a while.

I had no complaints with it.

I had a K&N panel filter... I swapped it out for a Buschur cone filter. Much happier with it!

If you're going to go with a panel, just don't get one that is all oiled up. My K&N started to make a mess in my airbox.

When you said once in a while, how many miles roughly? or perhaps how many months once?

I was using the Perrin Foam Panel Filter, until I went a full Intake system. The foam is a better filtering material and comes with a thicker oil, over what K&N uses.
I still have the Filter and cleaning kit, I'll let go for cheap.

I cant remember exactly what HKS recommended.

I think its like every 10-15k. I would take it out between oil changes and knock the dirt out.

I have a Works drop in but I've been running an OEM paper element for a while now. No noticeable power drop using the paper element. I just replace it every 10k and the Evo breathes fine.

Oiled elements stand risk of damaging the MAF or at least getting it dirty.

I recommend with HKS dry foam type factory replacement filter. I have been using these for awhile and no problem what so ever. The change interval is about every 6000 miles.

Cotton gauze which is almost always oiled, foam, which is usually oiled, and dry paper.
Dry paper is the best IMO. No re-oiling, no coating your maf and intake tract with oil, and excellent filtration.
It's what every car manufacturer i have seen uses.
It's what the Apexi Power intake which has been proven to offer the best flow ANd filtration uses. It's what the popular Buschur cone filter uses.

Cotton gauze only filters well when it has the perfect amount of oil in it, and gets bigger holes in it over time and is easy to over or under oil. I have had about 4 too many K&N filters over the years, and know this too well from personal experience. They are appealing because you can "re-charge" them, but the fact is, they rarely are as good after a year as when they were right out of the box.

Many foam filters keep larger particles out but not smaller ones, and are more suitable for racing, such as the HKS RS mushroom type. Some of the HKS flat panels share the same materials as these. Many of these suffer from the same problems as oiled gauze , like deteriorating over time..

I'm not saying using oild gauze or foam will destroy your engine. they all will keep the big crap out of your engine. but usually the better filtration you want, the more flow you sacrifice. Paper is the best of both.

^Well put.

HKS RS has insane sucking power, but you have to replace the filter every 5K miles, and they are ~$30 each time for replacements.

The Blitz drop in is pretty cool, too. You can get them on the Motion Garage garage site or the lancershop site.

I think blitz is made of cotton.

Any drop-in filter with paper based material?
