Inside my lightly cooked tranny

Ran out of fluid on the highway and locked in 5th gear.

Opened her up today. I will need AT LEAST: New 3rd, 4th, 5th, Rev gears/sleeves/synchros and bearings.

I'm still weighing the options... I will either rebuild it myself with Evo 8 3rd-4th, but I'm not sure if the countershaft is usable... it could become a very expensive rebuild.

I may opt to get a new one from Shep if the rebuild exceeds $1500.

This is definitely one of those "while i am in here" type of problems. One can only hope you wont have the tranny apart very frequently.

Mine was alot worse. I messed up my 3-4 shift fork, cracked 4th gear, 2nd gear grind, 3rd grind, and 5th had no teeth on the gear. All from slaming my gears in while drag racing my car. When racing I would get locked out of gear but I would just force it in. The shift fork broke on me when I was doing a run vs another Evo.

Got the whole trans rebuilt by Adam at Devo Tuning. I must say he did a great job. Also he hooked me up cheap for the Evo VIII 4th gear.

It leaked slowly for 3 days and 350 miles after a clutch job before I realized it

I refilled it and the next day it locked up in 5th. Bummer

The shaft is no good... gears and sychros look really really bad from the inside.

Ordered a Shep w/ Evo 8 gears and Double Synchro 5th. Hopefully I can make it to opening weekend at the drag strip.

Any idea what Shep recommends for fluid? I forgot to ask.

good luck with your situation. I'm sur you learned your lesson, when I did my clutch I actually thought of leaking situation so when everything was installed I started the car for a few minute and let it sit in a clean floor(garage) to check for leaks and so.
