Green hotside vs. regular 10.5 hotside: different?

Are turbine housings different between a regular 10.5 and FP green one?

Green's turbine wheel is bigger, so i can only assume the answer is yes and FP enlarges the 10.5 in order for the wheel to fit, correct?
The reason i ask is, i will be taking my green off, while keeping the hotside on the car and will put my stock 8 turbo into the green hotside. Which i assume will lead to slower spool, because the wheel and housing will be mismatched. Is that right?

Thanks

You are correct in that the Green's turbine housing starts life as an ordinary Mitsubishi 16G turbine housing. FP cuts it internally and enlarges the outlet area as well to accomodate the larger turbine wheel's diameters.

The stock wheel rotating inside the hogged-out housing should be a very relaxed spooler. I am just guessing though. Maybe someone else on here has firsthand experience. Or else, call Robert at FP ad ask.

I think i found the answer. FP machines the 10.5 hotside to fit the bigger turbine in it. So i'm in for some lag on a stock turbo

Edit: Sparky you beat me to it. Thanks for the info!

I realize that it's none of my business, but why are you doing this swap in the first place? I am just curious!

+1

why not just swap a 9.8 cm^2 along with the stock turbo?

I need to have it rebuilt. It developed a slight whine on spool-up, no whirring or whizzing or scraping on the housing, but a whine when spooling from -3 psi and up. Sounded like an ambulance siren far away. Or a quiet dentist's drill.
So i decided to take it off to see what's going on. Compressor looked fine, there was a little excessive shaft play in and out. And turbine wheel base is damaged and a couple of the fins' tips are slightly bent:

Notice bent tips on this one:

Are you sending the C.H.R.A. into FP for a rebuild? (Nice pics BTW). Do you not have a complete VIII turbo sitting around? If you do then just yank the Green's turbine housing off from the manifold and DP and install the complete VIII turbo including compressor discharge tube..

Yeah, i'll pull the hotside too. I didn't want at first, cause studs tend to break and get stuck in evo hotsides, but i changed my mind. Seems to be a good idea to send the whole unit to FP and not have lag.

At first your question about the oil filter struck me as being a bit odd, but you may have a point. Very shrewd! Although the turbine blade bits probably flew out the exhaust system, the metal particles from the thrashed bearings were probably carried off down the oil return line into the crankcase.

Yeah he's right! Cut the oil filter open with a hacksaw and do a sectional analysis, checking for metal particles.

I suppose an oil change is a good idea! I'll have to see if i feel like sawing the filter in half at the time

mplspilot: I don't know just how important spoolup is to you, but if it is essential, then you may want to ask FP to give you credit for your 10.5 hsg. and have them fit a 9.0 hsg. to your Green instead while they have it in for repair.

This 9.0 hsg. is a whole helluva lot of fun on the Green. I just never was satisfied with the way that my Green spooled with the 10.5. Yeah, I could get it to do 20# by 3400 RPM, but I still wasn't a happy camper.

Now I see 15 PSI by 2700 RPM, when I just barely crack the throttle a 1/2 inch. Transient response is WAY improved. It feels like a mansized TME. Great coming out of corners.

You know, i was actually gonna ask you how you like that 9.0..
What about top end? Don't you think 10.5 is a lot better in that dept? I'd like to see at least 22psi by redline.. I think topend is more important to me with green... I'm fine with 28psi by 3.9k

I have an 03 turbo sitting in my garage if you don't want to spend the $$ on a green.

Wounder where the metal fragments went...Have you checked your pistons?
