cone filter or drop in?? please help!!

hi to all the evo people!

im looking to start doing some upgrades to my 05 evo 8 and was going to start with an intake. after reading some posts on here, im totally confused. not sure if i should do a drop in filter or cone style filter. i was looking at the injen intake with full ic piping or the k & n typhoon. injen says it makes 22 hp and k & n says 14 hp. im not going to do a wild build on my evo, but want to make a little more power and maybe get better mpgs. also after reading some other posts do you have to get the ecu tuned after every add on? if so whats the average price and does anybody work on evos in or around cincinnati ohio? ive also been looking at basic cone filters through either buscher, ams and vivid. i would appreciate insight that you all can give me! i need to get something quickly as my stock air filter is getting dirty!

Drop in, you need to generate the "Vortex" that the box creates, a cone wont. FIRST POST?? Please do a search............ Go to Buschur Racing best bet for you in OHIO.

Based on your explanation of your goals I recommend a drop in or just a new OEM filter element. Yes you generally need to retune after installing an intake. First mod suggestion - 3" TBE that fits well and flows well.

alot of people have good luck with the injen intake +piping kit (youll need a tune after installing the injen intake). as for the k&n typhoon, that is one of the worst intakes you can get. i started out with the k&n drop in filter and upgraded to the buschur cone filter because it is a "dry" filter and i dont have to worry about oil getting on my maf sensor.
as others have said, a drop in filter may be the best for you at this point and time.
there isnt really anyone that i have found to install parts in the cincinnati area, so i have done all of my installs myself. pm me if you need any help.

Check out the Cobb Tuning SF Intake, SF stands for Same FU#$%&! intake, they claim there design doesn't throw off the MAF sensor. It is only a bracket and cone filter set up. It's about 115 off their site.

I would imagine the temp change from september to april helped out quite a bit with that gain as well.....somewhat hard to believe only a cone filter with everything else unchanged would net you 36 whp, sorry.

I have seen some data to suggest that the Apex'i messes with MAF readings.

At higher boost levels, the stock box is a restriction ans won't let you hold as much boost at redline.

Your best option (fliter-wise) is to get the Buschur filter or the much cheaper Ebay equivalent. You want one that bolts right to the MAF without the need for a MAF adaptor.
