Strange problem--car didn't move

I ran into a very strange thing yesterday while driving. I was cruising around town normally, and then at a stoplight, the light turns green so I put the clutch in, change to first, and slowly let the clutch pedal out with some gas. The car just sat and revved! Confused, I put the clutch pedal back in, switched to neutral and redid it, with success this time.

I know I wasn't in neutral, since I took it out of first on my 2nd attempt. And if I didn't put it all the way in first, wouldn't I grind? I've never had it half way in before, so I don't know what happens. Anyone have any idea what I did?

actually it would just pop out if not fully engaged. what type of linkage is on this transmission. i know sometimes mecahnical linkage may not be as precise. but i doubt it is really a problem with the proven set up of the evo.

Limey, what do you mean by "cable type linkage"?

No clutch slip, its only got 2000 easy-driven miles. I guess I'll just pretend that didn't happen and worry next time.

I've done that in reverse, but I had a feeling it might not have been in all the way even though I couldn't move it any farther, and there was a little grind when it popped out...

Mine didn't pop out, so I'm assuming I didn't put the gear in half-way.

Well,

All things considered the simplest solution is probably the correct one, that is to say for whatever reason the gear never engaged.

I have had it snag going into first once before (cold engine, cold everything) it felt like it was in all the way because the shifter would not move any further, but it actually never engaged the gear.

I would assume the linkage or the actual shift lever bound up and made it feel like it was in gear.

It's just one of those things that you do thousands of times and always get the expected result so the one time you don't get the expected result it seems very very strange!

i have also done that in 1st and in reverse. it only grinds when you think its in but know it doesnt feel right and try to push it in more. when you try to push it in more it grinds, so you have to dissengage and reengage instead of engaging it further. i done it about once every couple weeks. i think your car is fine. wouldnt worry bout it just make sure you engage the clutch enough so you can shift all the way.

"Turbo Z" asked what type of linkage was on this transmission....I merely answered his question...
