Was sold the wrong f-ing clutch

So I go to Auto zone to get an aftermarket clutch since my friend manages the place. He hooks me up, and I get the car to the shop. The shop calls me saying the clutch I gave them was way too small. I get to the shop and see that they are right. I call my friend at auto zone and he tells me there are two different vin codes for the evo. An "f" code and a "d" code. But these designations dont matter because he can only get me the wrong clutch. (the correct one was unavailable) Why the hell is every store asking for vin codes? I drive an 03 evo 8, and I didn't think the rs and mr designations came out until like 06. Even then, they still share the same drivetrain, so the clutches should be the same. Right? I finally found the correct clutch, but I was just curious as to what different trim models there were for the 03 model year.

03 just had the GSR. Keep in mind in 03 it wasn't called the GSR, just called an VIII. 05 was the first year for the MR.
Why would you go to Autozone to get a clutch? There are too many knowledgeable vendors out there to get your parts from to make a stupid mistake as such. Your own fault dude...

04 first RS. As stated the other clutch was for a regular lancer. All EVO clutches are the same 03-06

If your labor costs more than your clutch, than you already failed.
