It's simple, really. If you want the last little bit of HP/TQ out of your setup, then you will need adjustable cam gears. If you can live with the fact that installing them "straight up", i.e. using your stock cam gears and hoping that everything lines up as it should, may leave 10-15whp or 100 RPM spoolup or a combination thereof on the table, then you don't want adjustable cam gears.

I like the TOMEI 280 hydraulic lifter. But how is the idle going to be? I can allways remove the 272's and get the Tomei cams, but will I need any more upgrades than the ones I have?

The idle is going to lope and vacuum is going to be low...I've had some customers with them and they loved them but you have to do some tweaks to the ecu to get them to idle decent on the stock ecu.

I can't think of anything else you'd need to run these.

I can allways take it to the dyno shop and do some tuning on the ecu. I think is worth it.

another one to consider is the BF 272 cams from Buschur, quite a few guys making massive pump and race gas numbers. That's the cam I chose but AMS didn't test it...should make similar numbers to the Tomei 280's

Cam gears are very useful for tuning the engine's mechanical sweet spot to match the turbo and anticipated usage.

I would not recommend the Tomei 280 with the factory valvesprings - at all. Any cam with a decent ramp rate will present considerable stress to those valvesprings - something for which they were not intended.

A stock head will not respond to the Tomei 280s the way a ported head (e.g. AMS test) will. A stock head is dead at valve lifts above ~10.5mm. The extra lift on the Tomei 280s will deliver no more airflow with a stock head, but will make it harder on the valvetrain.

Just FYI

ok, I thought it was ported...something like the GSC S2 might be a better fit. I don't know if the Tomei would hurt performance necessarily but they likely will not work to their full potential either. The GSC S2 will still lope but might have a little better stock ecu/street manors.

just my .02 cents

I have some HKS 272's lying on the ground for the last 3 months just have not gotten time to install but based on my research I think the best idle (like stock) and low down grunt to mid power was with -4 -1, thats what I am tuning for I want to be able at any rpm to mash and go don't matter what gear I am in.
