Almost same question but on Evo 9 . Upon comparing 2 cams GSC S2 has more agressive intake lift 11.2mm vs 11.0mm in kelfords yet AMS cam test kelfords edge out and has a better top end. This test is on evo 8. Would the outcome be different on mivec engine?
Would a kelford 280/272 be considered overcam on red turbo?
Members that have an exprience on either cams ? I encourage you chime in.
Your input would be appreciated.

Would a kelford 280/272 be considered overcam on red turbo?
The difference in 0.2mm lift is small, and on a factory head, anything more than ~10.5mm lift can't make a difference for the reason I noted.

A MIVEC engine can be made to give somewhat different results, depending on the intake cam timing. MIVEC introduces another variable into the equation that can help us or hurt us, depending upon the tune.

Would a Kelford 280/272 be considered overcamming with a FP Red? I don't know. IIRC, the cam set used in AMS' test was a 272/272, and any such test illustrates trends, not absolutes. Keep in mind that the AMS test involved one particular combination, and the timing of all cams were adjusted with cam gears to meet published spec. If we substitute a factory head (AMS' head was ported) and just toss 'em in, that may very well change things to some extent. Likewise, if we have a turbo with a smaller hotside, that typically makes the point of 'overcamming' come sooner, simply due to the increased exhaust back pressure. Differences in intake manifold tuning will create some difference as well. Essentially, the best way to get a result as reliably close to AMS's as possible is to duplicate the exact setup they used. The more differences there are in one's setup, the greater likelihood that one will see differences in his results.

Wow guys thanks a lot for all the responses. It seems any of these cams would be a good choice. I will probably go with JUNS unless I decide to get a full port and polish.

After looking at AMS Cam shootout It seems the kelfords and gsc s2 will give very similar results just a minimal differences in hp gains, either top end or mid range.

Can you closely compare these to the JUNS (disregarding a built head and only including head studs, springs and retainers in the mix)? The grind is similar as stated before.

HKS 280s are fine with a factory head and valvetrain, and that's about it. They are outclassed by offerings with better ramp rates, such as the cams we are discussing here. But then again none of the cams we are discussing here should be used with the factory valvetrain, period.

A competently ported head will see greater airflow beyond 10.8mm lift. Cams like the GSCs and Tomei are able to take advantage of this because they give greater lift.

This doesn't mean that the JUNs are not capable cams, because they certainly are. What it means is that for certain setups, there is room for improvement. As to what difference this makes when the rubber hits the road depends upon a variety of things.

thanks for the answer i will search more on this to read up on this.....

Ted: Is the cylinderhead of your JAM VIII engine unported? And if so, is this why you have stuck with the relatively low lift, HKS cams on your own engine ?
