Problems with the Evo

whats up guys,

this is the first time Ive had anything wrong with the Evo, but here it goes. Out of nowhere today I was driving down the road and when I stopped at the light, the car had a horrible idle and eventually shut off, now this happens more and more frequently only when Im stopped, the car shuts off when the rpms hit 1K. Its an 03 Evo 8 with 80,000. Help?

I am wondering where you are going with this line of questioning? My car sat in the garage for a couple months with the battery disconected. Now, it idles a bit funkier and tries to die. Does the ECU "forget" how to idle when the battery is disconnected?

Correct the ECU in the EVO as in alot of cars will need to relearn (If you will) the idling settings when the battery is reconnected. Remember AC on and off are two maps so it needs to relearn for both

Sparky - Yes. The car has to relearn idle after a while. Try disconnecting again and then letting it idle for a good 30 mins. If that doesnt work and it idles too high or too low adjust the idle bleeder screw (phillips on the top-firewall side).

OP - vac and boost leak tested? Something clogged in the TB? Try taking it off the car and inspecting/cleaning it. There are a few pin-sized vac holes. If those are clogged who knows what they will screw up.

I cleaned out the TB about 2 months ago because the gas pedal seemed to stick a little bit, after that clean it was fine.

I hadd a feeling it may have been a vacuum hose (I am about to go check) but is there any chance any of you think it could be the fuel pump (maybe its clogged):?

OK so I checked all the vacuum hoses everything was fine...but then a friend of mine suggested that I check that TB Cable...and lo and behold it was a little laggy, so I adjusted the cable made it a tad bit tighter...and now the car runs and idles fine without any shutoff!

is it when you start the car and are idling, or when you come to a stop and start idling?

do you have a manual boost controller?

If tightening up the throttle cable fixed the problem you may want to check that it's not to tight and then adjust the idle bleeder screw as mentioned earlier. By tightening the throttle cable you are just artificially adjusting the idle by cracking the throttle plate slightly, a function that is supposed to be accomplished by the idle screw and the IAC motor. Just my .02

^ the TB Cable actually was a temporary fix, as you stated...and the car is still idleing like crap I double checked the battery, all the hoses...NOTHING, a friend of mine said it could be the sparkplugs?

but jmelocik, could you give me a heads up on where the idle bleeder screw is and the IAC motor,

so the problem again is that I will start the car and it will have a horrible idle of around 400 RPM and will not ever reach 1K, after driving it a bit it reaches the status of 8-9K but constantly bogs back down to lower RPMs. Even driving it I feel some sort of loss of power shifting thru gears...

also the only Engine/Electrical mods are:

Greddy SP2 Cat Back
Turbo XS BOV
HKS Type 0 TT

thats it! I even checked the intake and MAF (which had some blow-by in it) and cleaned it out and still the same horrible idle
