Oil Pan Removal Question

Hey, guys. I need to switch out my stock oil pan. The removal instructions in the service manual seem incomplete. There's this one confusing part (looks electrical) that is pictured in the enclosed photo, the part to the left of the dp and under the undercover, in the upper left. What is this part? Must I unhook the battery to safely remove it? I reviewed the entire service manual for the identity of this part with no luck. I don't know why it isn't mentioned in the oil pan removal instructions, as its removal is necessary to remove the pan. Please help. Thanks ... Oh, and any random tips for removing the oil pan are welcome, too.
