Replacing the Thermostat Question...

As I get out of my car I start to smell radiator fluid. So i lift up the hood and I see where some has splashed onto my UICP?!? It appears that the sealant used on the thermostat housing is starting to go. It looks like some sort of green or teal silicone?!? luckily my car is not overheating. Eitherway, im headed to get a thermostat.

When I replace the thermostat will I need a gasket or silicone ?

There is no silicone used on the tstat housing, the tstat itself should have a rubber gasket.

Also get the tstat from mitsubishi. Lancers and evos have different size thermostats and just about every autoparts store will give you one for a lancer.

what sux, is that there are only 3 Mits dealerships in Atlanta. There is a local autoparts place (WhiteBros) that swears they have the right one. I went to Orielly's initially and they said that there system only shows one for the lancer. I told him that its a 2.0l turbo and he says that its the same in their system?!?

I really haven't found any autoparts store that has different part numbers for lancer and evos for the tsat. I guess you can give it a shot and return it if it doesn't fit. While you have it apart you can at least silicone gasket the housing so it wont leak until you can get the part from the dealer.

The thermostat housing has a greenish/blue paper/fiber gasket where is mates with the cylinder head. The thermostat has a rubber o-ring style seal around it.

When I did my thermostat all It had was the round o ring gasket on the thermostat. I was unable to find the paper gasket when I ordered my thermostat but saw mine didn't come with one stock so I wasn't worried.

hmmm thats exactly the color of the residue on my UICP.
Is that a sign of a pending problem?
Is that greenish/blue paper fiber gasket a "must have" piece?
Is that greenish/blue paper fiber gasket a dealer only piece?
