what would YOU do??!?

Ok, let me address the problem i am having first: Just out of the blue, i jump in the evo and head to work, i notice that there isnt much butt power and glance at my boost gauge and notice i am only boosting 10.5lbs.. what the hell?!? well i brought it into the dealership to have them fix it.. well 6 days later and 4 days of them having my car, there still is no solution to the problem. They have replaced the intake boot, the wastegate actuator, the vacuum lines going to the boost solenoid, tested the boost solenoid, and still no solution. Apparently the techs and engineers are baffled and that my evo is not the only case, that in fact there are many others with this same symptom (loss of power), and nobody knows what the hell is going on?!? They are sending an engineer out tomorrow (which does nothing for me), so we will see what happens tomorrow. Back to the question though, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? I have not the slightest, i have been looking into lemon laws, but i have to get more info on it before i say anything, any thoughts??

Id start studying my lemon laws... but id see what they try to do first. It would suck for me to drive around in a bromken evo, but atleast give them a few more chances to fix it... but basically after i think 3 times they cant fix the same problem the car can be recalled as a lemon? NOt sure though

As long as they are working on it with a good faith effort from Mitsu, let 'em keep at it until they fix it. Hold off on the threats unless you find they have given up.

Please add to this post with the final resolution. Like you, I think there are others with low power EVO's. If there is a common thread you discover it would be good to know about it.

There's a vacuum restrictor in one of the lines, I believe the one to the wastegate solenoid. If they replaced the lines, they did replace the restrictor too, right?

10.5lbs of boost sounds like the turbo is operating totally on the internal wastegate somehow. I believe that is about what the spring is set to. This would imply that the turbo is indeed getting a vacuum/boost signal. You said they tested the solenoid, have they replaced it? It could be stuck open or something.

EDIT: Oh yah, what would I do (the real topic of this thread)? Wait it out for the engineer. Just because these guys are service techs doesn't mean they necessarily know all of the workings of the Evo turbo system. Just be a little more patient, as hard as that may be.

The lemon law is geared tward the engine and transmission or any part on the car that costs a few thousand $ to fix. i don't think they will call it a lemon for a boost problem.
what mods do you have on your evo? (hel if i no)

as far as mods go, i only have the rmr intake filter which was done many miles before this problem occured.. the problem i am having now is that it doesnt seem like the dealership is taking this seriously, i asked them if it would be possible to get a rental car while they try to fix the thing, and the response i got was "no, its driveable". REALLY?!? by no means is the car driveable, for one, its not the car i bought originally, two they should keep the car until the damn thing is fixed, three i cant keep leaving work to drop my car off every damn day like i have done for the last five times i brought it in, its just unacceptable.. to me it seems like they should be rolling out the red carpet, this isnt no stock mirage with 200k miles on it, this is an EVO with serious unexplainable problems with less than 10k miles!

It is time to look into the lemon law. Keep every thing they give you, any receipt on work they have done and how long it has been in the shop. Just in case they can not solve the problem for you and you do have to take legal action. Good luck.

Logically theres only so many possibilities, which really makes it hard to believe that the dealership has had such a tough time finding the issue. If I were a betting man 10.5psi sounds like static boost pressure, which is what you get if you unplug the electrical connector from your factory boost controller(FBC). Check to ensure that the FBC has the hoses on correctly (secure and on the right nipples), and that the connector is solidly plugged in. Even if it is connected... is it getting power?? This is where I would look first.

The next thing I would do is beg, borrow, or steal an MBC. Installing it will help verify whether your issue is due to a stock solenoid/engine management issue, or if you have a boost leak of some sort.

If your boost runs fine with the MBC, then you can begin to isolate/test the FBC, and other associated vaccum lines. If the boost is still screwed-up with the MBC installed, then logically begin checking every possible juction point on the high-pressure side of things to see if you can identify a bad hose seal, hose popped-off,etc..... . I have a link at home that came from the Syclone board where you can actually build your own pressure tester using a piece of Motorcyle innertube and a hand-pump with gauge. Its pretty shade-tree but it does work. In the mean time just walk through the flow-path on the high-pressure side of the turbo and see if anything surfaces. Also look very closely at your intake to see if you have any vaccuum lines popped-loose and causing pressure bleed-off. This should be easy to fix.

My.02...good luck and let us know what you find.

Jeff

dude, thanks for the input, but the car is out of my hands, and everything and anything has been tested for problems, the issue of the stock solenoid has long since been out of the question.. they are thinking that the ecu could be the problem now.

Well, the eco should only take them an hour to swap, esp if they have another evo on the lot to borrow one from for testing. They may have checked the solinoid itself, but did they check the harness that plugs into it?? If the harness is bad it will not function and that sure sounds like the issue.

Call MMSA 1-888-MITSU-2003 and fill them in on this. THis is a warranty repair and I think they have to give you a rental or something to drive.

Keep track of everything and don't threaten with the lemon law just yet. Wait and see what the engineer comes up with, but keep calling mitsu to get and give updates on your case.

Gee I wonder if this has anything to do with you dicking around with your MBC

And I love the little "many people with this problem" line. That one always makes me

Suuuuure. Go plug the line to the factory boost controller back in, kid, and try not to hit 26lbs of boost again.

So what was the problem and how did they fix it? Was it covered under warranty after all?
