FP Red... What Valves/springs?

Hi Guys,

I'm about done with my FP red setup, just have a question on what Valves/Retainers I should get. Mind you, I dont need to go with something crazy. Just something that will help maintain reliability with my car. I know my HKS 272's arent as agressive as most other cams, but I want a good idle on my Evo 8. Keep in mind that Evo 9's with more agressive cams have a better idle because of Mivec.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A RACE CAR. IT IS MY DAILY DRIVER!!

Here are the power mods I have sitting around to go on my stock 03 Evo:

Ported FP Red turbo
Buschur turbo-back w/ test pipe & magnaflow muffler
1200CC injectors
Buschur dual-fuel pump
EPM 02 dump
HKS 272 cams
Fidanza Cam gears
Ported/Coated stock Exhaust Manifold
Perrin big FMIC
RMR FMIC piping
RMR intake
Forge DV
Fidanza Aluminum flywheel
ACT 2600 clutch
APR Head Stud Bolts
To be tuned on stock ECU with E-85

Thanks to all suggestions in my previous mod thread. I got rid of the Megan manifold as you suggested but decided to stick with the HKS 272's to maintain driveability since this is my only car, driven daily in upstate, cold NY.

My previous thread: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=373542

Let me know if I am missing anything else.

Thanks

The only things that really matter here are the cams and expected rpm range. For you, a mild spring upgrade is plenty if it makes you sleep better at night. The relatively low lift and mild ramp rates of the HKS cams are probably as easy on the valvetrain as are the factory cams.

Stop leaving stuff sitting around and get to work! All of those parts are (mostly) separate install jobs. Install one or three at a time and make sure all is well between each step.

Supertechs or possibly GSC's beehive springs seem to be the popular choice, but I would say they're NOT needed for HKS 272's. I have HKS 280's and have been running them for about 35,000 miles on the stock springs with zero issues.

why dont you sell your hks cams and go with cosworth or even s1 cams...you wont need springs/retainers so just save the money...you say its your DD so its not like your going to take it up to 8000 rpms all the time...just save the money

Guys I think I'm caving for the Kelford 272's....

I found a good deal on Brian Crower springs/retainers - $205. Anyone have any experience with these? I assume they would go good with the Kelfords.

Will be running FP Red @30psi on E-85.

I have the Kelfords and BC Springs and retainers in stock also.. I also have the GSC Beehive kit for a few dollars more and its a better choice, IMO..

The Basic GSC Beehive set that utilizes stock seat and retainer is good to around 8500rpm.. The stock rod bolts dont like much more RPM anyway so these are good for stock motors..

Should the stock springs handle 8k rpm range with M2's or Kelford's 272s with the FP RED?

I went with the Kelford 272's and got Beehive springs.... Is it ok to re-use the stock retainers or do I need aftermarket retainers?
