My AMS 2.0L build

It has been a long time coming. For those who remember (which I doubt is anyone) I blew my motor in April of 2006. The number 4 piston popped and the detonation blew a rocker arm off the exhaust valve in the head.

After 2.5 years (almost 1 year per liter hmm...) I finally got the cash to purchase the shortblock. My orginal intentions were to rebuild the engine myself. Well, a back injury later (not related to the evo) a child being born, and working two full-time jobs the project fell by the wayside. I had pulled the engine out in June 2006 and there it sat. I slowly collected parts. But due to the lack of time I wanted the car to be sent to Chicago so AMS could do the build. Oddly enough having a non-running car minus the engine costs more to transport than a running vehicle. I kept trying to reach that magic number of 7k to have the car rebuilt. That never happened. I kept coming close but life (wife) always sucked my wallet dry.

To conclude my little anecdote, the AMS 2.0L shortblock arrived this morning. I hung it on the engine stand and I am beginning to transfer parts over.

So far I have:
JUN 264 cams
Cusco twin disk clutch
ARP head studs
New oil pump/water pump
AMS 2.0L shortblock
stock headgasket (new)
Rebuilt Cosworth CNC head (from AMS)
There is probably more but I cant remeber it all.

Here are some pics

I am hoping that the hard part is over. I cleared all my major obstacles. The only one remaining is the tune.

I also now have a full set of spares. BR spec JE pistons, Carillo rods and the engine core itself. I am thinking of keeping the core to build the original motor to have an extra one lying around.

I removed the oil pan last night. The thing was full of metal shavings. Thats interesting because I thought When I drained the oil I didnt notice and metal in it. I suppose it came from the piston when it broke apart.

I dunked it in a solvent tank this morning and cleaned all the old seal off. I need to remove the oil filter housing and do the same.

I will post pics when I get it home.

Stock pistons

Stock oil pump and balance shaft

Stock block completely torn down

Please change your oil cooler out prior to installing your new motor. Any shavings in the oil cooler will make their way out eventually and will contaminate your new bearings. No matter how much you try to clean the cooler, you will never get everything out.

We have an upgraded one that comes with new lines and such. It is cheaper than the factory oil cooler. Details can be found in our online store.

I also want to thank AMS for their support.

Darius and Scott you both have been a big help.

Thanks a ton for getting me that Cossie head. It will put my mind at ease.

Pics to come as soon as I can upload them.

I disassembled the old motor this morning. The only thing left in it is the oil squirters. Apparently the metal in the oil pan was all piston. The bearings are slightly scored from it but the crank journals are clean. None of the bearings were spun.

The balance shaft surprised me. I never realized how much it actually weighs. Same for the oil pump. I wasnt expecting it to be designed like that. I guess it comes from working on older cars where the pump was an external housing. I have never rebuilt a mitsu eng before.
