Strange clicking in engine bay under load??

Ok, so along with my boost issue right now of boost response being slow, which i still havent figured out, i am now getting a strange clicking noise in the engine bay when i hit the gas pedal down.

Here is the scenario of how it happens.

Only noticeable below 3k before turbo builds any boost.
When i gas it, as boost gauge starts to climb to zero, i here a click click click click in a fast sequence.

If i let off the gas right after this i here the same clicking in a series as high as 8-10 times. I have to wonder if this clicking has something to do with my boost issue. I have never heard this noise before. It almost makes me think my BOV is opening and closing extremely quick or something.

Has anyone ever heard a series of clicks like this? Im really starting to get pissed about my boost response going to **** with no overly apparent problems, and now im getting crazy noises!

Well i pulled the turbo out tuesday night. There is some shaft play, and i was thinking i would find some scrape marks in the housing from the wheel but there wasnt any.

I said screw it and bought a low mileage 9 turbo from another member and should have it on by monday night. I hope this fixes not only my strange noise but also the fact that i was having extremely laggy boost response.

If not, well at least i have a core for a red now

take off the clamp and check the hot side (turbine wheel). its easyer than opening the compressor housing

when i couldnt get my greddy profec B to work right, i had ISP use AEM EMS boost control through the greddy solenoid. He just modified the duty cycle by varying the impedance to the solenoid using the AEM.

Anyways...the ticking coming from the solenoid was alot louder than normal for some reason...but i've never heard the stock solenoid tick like the greddy when we used it for boost control. (the AEM/greddy setup was on my old evo, now i'm still using the stock solenoid/boost control on my IX)

My stock boost solenoid is still plugged in, however i am using a turbo xs boost controller.

Although i know that the clicking could be coming from it, i dont see why it would start making the noise all of a sudden that loud, or why the solenoid should be rapidly firing like that before the car is even building boost. The job of the solenoid is to make adjustments as the boost climbs, so rapid firing of it while under vaccuum dosent make sense to me.

Either way, im going to be pissed if i went through the work of pulling my turbo, buying another, and installing it if this dosent take care of the problem. I feel this was my only choice though, as there is no other aparent problems with the car to explain why boost is sluggish, and strange noises coming from the front of the engine bay.

No havent thought about that at all. Im not sure why it would pulse so fast though. Ill take a look anyways. Just got my new 9 turbo and install kit, so that will be going on sunday. Hopefully that is the fix.

I installed a new turbo last night, and i am happy to say that my boost problem is gone

However, the clicking still remains in the engine bay. I now believe it must be the electronic boost controller. If i unplug it, will it throw a CEL code?

Although it is plugged in, i am using a MBC currently.
