Tranny woes

Hi,
I bought my IX used and have a problem. The shifter is VERY sloppy. When in any gear, you can wiggle the shifter left and right probably a good 3/4 inch both ways. The car shifts fine. There's no grinds. Basically when in gear, the shifter feels like it's in neutral. There's that much play.
I was planning to get some bushings for the hell of it, but wanted to see if evom can figure it out instead of me throwing money at it.
Thanks

I don't think it's the bushings. I looked that them and they look fine. I got Buschur bushings and they didn't solve my problem.

I would say the bushings for under the hood and also the shifter base bushings. Other than that you might need it adjusted somwhere. Im not sure how you adjust the shifter cables but Im sure its posible.

Its normal. I had my Evo IX MR for a year and a half with 39k on it and the shifter was always like this. I installed the Buschur underhood bushings and works shifter base bushings and it tightened up the shifter a lot. The shifter still wiggled but not as much as before.

its not the bushings and its not normal, when the shifter is in first or second the shifter will return to the 3rd or 4th position when released.

I checked the bushings and they look fine.

My shifter has a bit of play at the "balljoint" down in the base. I thought about filling it with some kind of heavy grease, or maybe taking some window weld and molding a bushing of sorts around the ball to tighten it up.

Just make sure everything is tightened. There isn't a whole lot involved with the linkage, and having new bushings narrows it down even further. Double check all the bolts on the shifter base and follow the linkage to the engine making sure everything is tight (try wiggling the linkage). If everything seems fine, you might have bigger problems.
