If you baby it and keep on top of it 3 years. If you beat it and not care for oil change and other service needs I give it 3-4 months.

it all depend on how you take care of it, if you constantly going to beat on the motor probably won't last that long.

You would think that a built motor would carry some advantages that would make it possibly be longer lasting than a factory motor.

They're generally put together with higher quality parts. More care can be taken checking tolerances and in general motor assembly. Many changes can be made that improve engine reliability over stock like O-rings and other custom block machining.

The only thing really keeping built motors from lasting way longer than stock is most push the horsepower beyond design parameters and most are beat on by the drivers.

if you build the motor just to safely run about 400/400 and not that much more, how would that be?

In other words, can you get a motor built simply for reliability purposes rather than holding more power? To retain all the stock characteristics, no oil consumption etc?

^^i think that would defeat the purpose of a built motor since the stock motor can handle that and there have been some people that have been beating on it for over 100,000K miles. Plus there's no chance of human error since the motor was built by Mitsubishi. IMO
