Biggest cams...?

Hello!! I was looking at AMS's post about the cams they tested...The Tomei made the most power. Are there any cams bigger than those? Is it all about the lift or duration that makes the power?? Do you have to have a "fully" built head to use these cams, or are just springs enough? Thanks for any info given!! ;-)

It's not about what cams are the biggest. All cams have different profiles that work differently for any given setup. The Tomei 280 are good for a high revving motor (8500rpm+), but that doesn't mean they'll make the most power on all setups.

AMS's test wasnt entitled "what cam everyone should buy". If you tell us what exaclty you're looking to do, and what your goals are, we can help. I know you're new, so I'm just trying to help.

So anyways, what are you looking to do?

I have an '03 rs. I wanted to get an FP Red. I didnt plan on building the motor, other than cams. And if I needed springs, retainers, ect...I will be driving it daily, and some racing at tracks or street as well...I know some cams aren't "streetable", but a rough dile doesnt really bother me. I wanted the cams that are going to make me the most power. If I cant rev my motor that high b/c it will be stock, then I guess it will be pointless to get cams that only make power where my motor wont go...Thanks!!

you might want to look into a set that makes good power down low in rpms.

'03 RS? thought the RS's didn't come out till '04... anyways, for a stock motor I would go with cams that will make the most power throughout the power band, not just peak. Most cams in this range should have a descent "drivability"
search around, you will see quite a few that fall into this category

Kelford 272's will work very good for your setup on stock motor.. A big cam is not going to yield anything but dyno #'s on a stock motor car.. In other words if you want a faster car use a 272 cam like kelford or similar.. if you want a peak #, sure go for tomeis..

That's a good way of putting it.
