Max Output on Stock Rods and Pistons

Okay guys, my Evo is currently sitting around 390 whp on e85, if you need more details on my car look at my sig.

Anyhow just wanted to see when I should replace my rods and pistons. I know Buschur is only comfortable going to 400 whp on the stockers running 93 octane and wanted to hear what you guys thought.

I know there's a lot of 500+ whp cars out there on the stock pistons and rods, but what's safe?

- Steve

PS I use my car mostly for DD and the occasional mountain race. I do beat up on her a lot but don't take the car really past 7500 rmps.

YOU SAID: I know there's a lot of 500+ whp cars out there on the stock pistons and rods, but what's safe?

yeah but they are blowing up left and right, not to be negative but it seems that is the limit of the stock block bottom end, although many many peeps running same power level you are running and plus, 400-450 WHP and they seem fine once they hit the 500 thingns get scary, it seems to be the lessons learned on the evos.

however its impressive the 4G is one strong ****, i havent seen a platform out there thats stock that can do what the evo does.

Stock is very safe.. 400whp is still pretty safe.. 450 is getting to be unsafe depending on yoru tune and over 500 if something goes wrong, bad tank of gas etc you can lose the motor..

do you plan on building the motor/ head? when it comes time for me i will get a big turbo first like HTA35R and test out the stock shorty when i know i have money in the bank to build a new motor....but Buschur hasn't only built one fast car...he's built HUNDRED'S! the man does know what he's talking about so i would say anywhere 450 - 500 whp would be good on the stock block but it's not gonna last forever

Well I'm debating on getting a new turbo, possibly the FP Red, and was hoping to hit around the mid 400's and wanted to know how much a gamble it would be without replacing my pistons and rods.

It's crazy cause I've seen 500+ whp cars running fine with the stock bottom end, others I've seen at 430 whp and they've blown a hole through their small blocks cause the rods gave out. Guess some of it must be luck

BTW I'm running e85 which is quite a bit safer than regular gasoline. Currently I've got a max of 1 count of knock, there's a lot of room on my tune right now.

listen you can run 500whp on stock block but 1 good rule of them here in jersey. " if your going to build big, always have money aside for a blown up motor " lol. like mike@AWD said, you can do 500+ but if you get a bad tank of gas or w.e theres your block.

just dont be stupid like alot of un-knowledge ppl are, at least your asking qeustions which is good lol....The E85 will help you, do a FP Red or a 30r build the head, .5mm bigger valves, cams, springs, port....and tune on E85 you will be happy but just tune it safe.

There is some good info here. Spending every last cent on power mods with no cushion for repairs is not a sound decision. Make like a boyscout and be prepared.

I'm currently pushing 500whp on a Mustang Dyno running a ETS PT61mm on the stock block using E85 the only thing you gotta worry about is that I see that your in Denver I believe in area of extreme cold climate they change the blend of the E85 to a lesser content of Ethonol were lucky here in the Bay Area in California that they keep the same blend all year round so it's something to watch out for your build.

Well can you run 500 yes you can. I think the dangerous part is for the guys who run 500 all day everyday. During the week I probably use maybe 50-100hp just merging on the highway. So with the future of a Red turbo setup and making 500 peak HP I'm not worried about it.

I believe there's a guy that ran 10.0's on the stock longblock. I think his car is RICER and his name is Emery. It's just how you take care of your car and how it's tuned.
