question on oil filter
question on oil filter
ok so i changed my oil yesterday and everywhere i go they tell me the fram part # is 7317 but this is like a shot glass compared to the one i took off, so if anyone else has had this issue what filter # did you use instead of the 7317
First of all, I suggest using something besides a Fram. Pick any other brand and you will be getting a better filter.
Second, I suggest digging back into the filter book until you find the Dodge Stealth - back before the year 2000 and using that filter. It is the largest filter that will fit an Evo, Then when you buy the 5 quart container of synthetic oil you dump the works in - simple.

Buy oem filters - they are the best and under $5.00 a piece, order 3 at a time and you will always have them available.
ditch the fram crap +1......and yea most parts stores try and sell you the tiny lancer filter, that is all that is in their computers - you have to look it up in the book.

A little story: In midyear in 1992 the Mitsubishi DSM 4G63 engines went from a larger filter to a smaller filter. So when you went to pick up a filter from the parts house the book wanted to know exactly when your car was built.
Well, this caused a lot of confusion amongst owners. So there were constant posts to the boards concerning which filter to use. To make it even more confusing my car came with a large filter and the filter book, even when I went by the correct build date, specified the small filter.
Finally, some inquiring mind went all the way to the Mitsu engineers to get this question cleared up. First he learned that Mitsu specified the smaller filter because they had intended to put something on the car that would intrude into the oil filter space. Well, this never happened. Second, they said that any filter specified for ANY Mitsubishi engine will fit any other Mitsubishi engine. They all use the same diameter gasket.
So what you want is a quality filter with a good strong bypass valve and lots of media area. Plugged filter media is what causes the bypass to open and this leads to noisy lifters. Well, the Stealth has a Mitsu engine, the filter is a lot bigger and, guess what, it is cheaper than the Evo filter. I even run one on my WRX.
