Best Oil and Filter to use

I have a 2003 Lancer ES

What is the best oil to use? I know that is a very subjective question. I usually run Mobil 1 full synthetic, or Mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage oil in all my vehicles....

I have read here on the forum that some people really dislike Mobil 1. However, of those posts, it looks like they don't have enough zddp? for the turbo system. Also something about zinc? I do not have a turbo, just the n/a 2.0L

Which leads me to this, I know my oil filter size is a 7317. I do not like Fram oil filters. Just something I picked up while I used to do oil changes a long time ago. What is a good oil filter, that is quality? Of course, I am trying to be frugal, but I don't want to put an inferior product in my vehicle. is there an oversized filter I can use?

Fram filters are complete garbage, I use purolator pure one, they're manufactured in the same plant as Mobil 1 filters, same exact materials and design, just a little less filter media inside.

Personally I use the filters straight from the dealership. I only pay 2 bucks more for them, and I figure since the motor was designed using them (flow rates & pressure etc) I might as well lol. For oil castrol gtx is what I use in all my engines, never had any problems specifically because of the oil. Honestly it's more important to change oil often than what brand you use (assuming proper weight is used)

Edit: the dealership said there was 2 filters listed for my car, but only one actually seated properly. It was the narrower one.. maybe 3 inches in diameter or so

any opinions on the zinc or zddp issues?

I have been running 10-30 or 10-40 mobil 1 and the same in high mileage oil

what should I use as far as that go? I am very tough on 3k mile oil changes

I use Castrol Edge. Synthetics have a better additive package to help keep things cleaner in the oil passages. I go with 5w-30 because here it gets pretty cold in winter and I want a lighter viscosity for cold starts during winter(plus it's the manufacturer recommended viscosity) but from my reading there are some folks who run 10w-30 with no problems. Imo I'd rather have a lighter viscosity for cold starts(even during summer) than a heavier one though, for pressure's sake. Since I'm not turbo I don't worry about the zinc and zddp stuff, but I never heard anything like that about the oil I use, I just change it religiously every 3k miles.

Found a WIX filter locally, so I will be using that.

still interested in finding out more about the zinc issue noted above though.....

I haven't had any issues with Mobil 1, but I don't want any issues, either.....

Makes me wonder if anyone did a composition analysis of different brands of oil. I heard from a guy I know that somebody did testing of the different brands of oils, but I think it was just along the line of reliability under high temps.

I remember there used to be a website called bob the oil guy or something like that.

but I have never actually seen any real evidence.. How do I know those results weren't manipulated? Just because someone says something online doesn't mean it is true......

Also, it was mentioned earlier in this thread about Mobil 1 being sub-par, but that was for a turbo, and I don't have a turbo....

Same here, I used to use Mobil 1 but the only reason I switched was the only 5w-30 available in full synthetic when I picked it up once was Castrol Edge, but Mobil 1 is a buck less so I might opt for keeping that measly dollar in my pocket in the future
