ACT HDSD impressions
ACT HDSD impressions
A few months back I was searching for a new clutch and around the same time found out about Street Tuned Motorsports (STM) here in Rochester, so I stopped in to see what they had.
Let me first just say that, if you're anywhere near Rochester, I'd definitely recommend bringing your EVO here. Emery (Emery@STM) really knows his stuff and is a great guy to boot. He happily answered all of my idiotic questions and went out of his way to make sure I was taken care of. On one occasion, when I had let my brake fluid get too low, letting air into the clutch, he bled it for me, topped it up, took it for a test ride and didn't charge me a thing. Very happy with this place.
Anyway, I was leaning towards the ACT HDSS at the time, but was concerned with the lock out issues I'd been hearing about. Emery suggested the solid hub SD disc instead of the sprung SS disc. He gave me an explanation, at the time, why it wouldn't be susceptible to the lockout issue, but I don't dare try and repeat it.
So, I agreed to give it a try, and decided to throw the prolite flywheel in at the same time. I was a little concerned about tranny noise, etc., going with a solid hub, but after having it put in, I've had absolutely no regrets & I love the clutch.
The clutch grabs great, and still has the nice smooth engagement of a street disc. No chatter or bouncing on take off or in shifts and still slips nice when you have to. Feel is pretty close to stock clutch IMO.
The HD pressure plate is a little stiffer than stock, which I actually like. No leg fatigue problems in stop and go traffic at all.
The best part is the shifting. The combination of the lighter flywheel and solid hub make quick shifts a breeze. On a nice quick shift (or at least what I think is a quick shift), the rpms are at the perfect spot when you engage the next gear. And supposedly the reduced rotating mass of the disc is a little easier on your synchros.
As for noise, there is a little trans. noise when downshifting or decelerating, but nothing major at all. I don't even notice it anymore. When accelerating or cruising, there's basically none. Oh, and no lockout either.
All in all, I'm extremely happy with this clutch and would definitely recommend it if your looking for a great 400+ WHP clutch without spending a ton of money.
