Cracked/holes in tranny housing

Alright, so after having tranny leaks, I took it to the dealer to get it fixed. In addition to it being some seals, they noticed that there were two holes on the housing itself. One had been welded up (assumedly by whatever moron had the car before me) and the other one was not. My question is how does such a thing occur? How does one even crack their tranny like that? The one that was welded up was decently large...around the size of a penny actually.

Many times newbie mechanics do a hole on the tranny in order to release the transmission. I forgot the name of the part but its like a little lock that its hard to access. Once they remove it they weld the hole. I heard it doesn't really cause problems but I am not completely SURE. But many times that's why you find that hole there.

Are you referring to the throw out bearing? I dont know why anyone would cut a hole in the trannie to release it as you can do it from the bottom. Also that doesnt makes sense because the TOB is in the bellhousing and there's no fluid in there. Maybe your talking about something else.

I just remember a recent EVO in the shop who one mechanic made a hole to get it out. It was an MR I am not sure if that would make much of a diff.
