Tranny problem-- how screwed am I?

My tranny started making a weird noise when i released the clutch earlier this week. A bit of a high pitched whirring that was electrical/mechanical sounding. Pretty much a terrible sound. The car was still driving fine/gauges were ok/fluids all fine so I had to bring it in.

The dealer says its a transmission bearing and its going to take at least 10hrs to diagnose which one (since theyll have to drop it) and another 10 to fix it.... plus parts cost. They said the warranty is void because the previous owner installed an after market clutch. Damn.

I've only had the car for 3K miles... bought in November. Im going to rip the sales manager a new a-hole. Hopefully theyll do something about it but if they dont-- does anyone have any ideas/previous experiences similar to this that can maybe help out? Would it be cheaper just to swap the whole damn transmission instead of paying $1800 + parts cost (which im told will be 'expensive')?

If I were you, I'd have a local shop pull the tranny for you and have it shipped to Shep or TRE or Buschur. If you need new tranny parts, might as well get a built tranny =]

If you could get the transmission off the car you could send it to Sheptrans for a rebuild. I just got mine back and trust me it was a whole lot worse than yours. Costs around $1K w/shipping plus extra for any major broken parts. I had a busted 3rd and 4th as well as a worn 1st input shaft and gear which cost me about 1600 w/shipping.

Dunno. I would call and ask. I would think so, but I could be wrong.

Not that hard at all. Just time consuming. Have a look.

The first time I pulled the tranny it took me 12 hrs (2 days) taking my time and the same putting it back on (I was working alone). Then when I did my clutch and had a buddy helping, it only took me 10 hrs total (pulling and reinstalling). Just make sure you have all tools and fluids. Air tools wouldn't hurt either.

not worth it to rebuild the six speed imo
just gonna blow up again if you're driving it hard

then again, not sure how strong the TRE rebuilds are

The latest...

Got word from the place that sold me the car that theyd cover it at their local Mitsu as long as it was the tranny and not the clutch-- which it is obviously the tranny. I'll have to drive the car from Boston to NYC next week sometime. Hopefully it makes it but I do have AAA if needed.

Grava Mitsu is useless-- much like Cornerstone. Probably filled their quota for warranty work this month and dont want to do it unless theyre getting paid.

Now I remember why I wanted to buy a new car and not a used one-- you just end up buying other peoples problems. If only new cars werent so damn expensive.

Oh well.
