Motor Rebuild (Only Rings & Bearings)

Hey guys I was just told by my tuner that my rings are gone...Sucks!
I was told by a couple friends that I can just replace Main & Rod bearings and rings and I would have a nice stock block without blowing a load of cash.

So I was wondering if anyone had good suggestions as far as what brand bearings I should go with and what rings?

Thanks

If you replace rings I believe you need to hone the bores so that the rings seat properly. Regardless, if you are gonna through all that trouble you may as well pick up some stronger pistons and rods.

I thought about that (new pistons and rods) but I really do not have enough right now...I appreciate it but trust me...every penny counts for me right now...thats why I ask for suggestions for rings and bearings....I was thinking Cosworth main and rod bearings and hks ring set...

How do you know the rings are done? Did your tuner do a leakdown test?

No he didn't but he seriously doubt it was a burned valve when the car is and 03 with 37,XXXmiles on it...my brother got into a accident with the car, and he keep trying to start it up after he crash and thats why my tuners thinks the rings are fired...

So did you strip the motor already? If so do you have pics of the pistons, rings, and bores? If not.. how do you know the rings are bad? What symptoms is the motor exhibiting?

Im sure he did a compression check and assumed the rings were bad instead of a valve...

BINGO!...Cylinder 1 was 180, cylinder 2 was 140, cylinder 3 was 160 and cylinder 4 was 100

The car acts funny when i drive it...it feels like I have lag when I have stock boost and intercooler on

You should try squirting oil into the cylinders and see if compression gets better...

Theres a possibility when your brother kept trying to start it that he fuel soaked it which could have washed down the cylinder wall causing the rings to not be able to seal fully. Squirting oil could possibly allow them to seal. Just a thought

You should do a leak down. If you hear the air escaping via the oil cap then it is the rings. If you hear air escaping via the intake manifold or exhaust manifold/turbo then it would be the valves. Maybe you have a valve not seated perfectly?

But with compression like that it sounds like rings or a cracked piston maybe.

If money is tight then you could just change rings but I think a hone is needed. The smarter guys on the board will know.

I've done rings and bearings on 4g63's and works just fine, but of course w/a hone and break-in. For my current rebuilt, I bought some Nippon rings and ACL race bearings.
