besides a turbo upgrade.

how about getting some internal work done. since your car is past 110k i would start thinking of putting in fresh internals. Like maybe some new head bolts or maybe a stroker kit. i'm assuming here, but it seems that you like your engine bay sleeper status. a 2.3 would definitely be a good choice, thought that is a 'bit' over your price range. i believe it's well worth it and would keep you happy if you decided to keep your stock turbo.

I would rather have a fresh motor instead of adding in a turbo with a motor that will work half *** with it.

Purchased!

I'm now looking into doing a 2.3 later in the year. I need to convince my wife, which will take a few months of coaxing.

"Honey, I haven't had a car payment in over a year."

Why do people say "the 2.3 is great if you want to keep the stock turbo?" Won't the increased displacement require an increase in flow? Will the 2.3L with FP Green be a good combo?

You can do great things on just the IX turbo, so I'd start searching the FS forums here for a good deal. That "should" leave you around 1500$ to spend.

EPM 02 Dump housing
IC pipes
ported IM/TB
lightweight motor mounts
IX turbo

that should be around 2g's total, and will net you some HP, should help decrease spool, and maybe drop some weight at the same time. All very good things for AutoX
yes it is, BSP and above

If this was about handling, I'd mention that I have Megan street coilovers, whiteline swaybars and 3 sets of stock rims with various tires. I hate clutter. So, please try to stay on topic... which is POWER.
