I'm having the same problem on my 06 mr. I just got the car and it shifts fine in all gears except it's tough to put into 6th gear. Once in 6th it doesn't shift out into Neutral smooth. It feels bad shifting out of 6th gear. Just this weekend I was had trouble shifting into 1st after having just shifted out of 6th and come to a complete stop. I'm at 25,500 miles right now.

If you search Evo 6th gear, this problem seems to be happening to a lot of guys. My Evo IX MR is under 10k miles and has the same problem. I am getting a lot of crap from the dealer. He says it's because of mods (Cobb turbo-back exhaust, Perrin intake, Ohlins coilovers, Whiteline roll kit). I have the stock turbo and cams and run stock psi. On another thread about this issue, the apparent culprit was a synchro/slider spring. I think the tranny problem has as much to do with my mods as it does with the fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview. Are most owners getting this fixed under warranty?

A quick glance at the last two threads on this show D420mac, Fireball, Rolocoaster, Monkey 187 (twice), Tyrone, Nez136, Icrnk, Catalyst IX and John Bradley, all had this problem. Zoinks! Any other IX MR pilots with this experience? Warranty honored, or not so much? With a failure under 10k miles, should I just bail on the OEM 6-speed or has anyone had it fixed and never surface again?

Add to that Ram1320, istevo, yasin, bboy_RES, lilnaz, Last4G63, CulVIIIER, DJBrettB, Fast-Mover, Nuked, Jay644, CaLi4G63 and fromWRXtoEVO.....in about 15 minutes of quick searching that's 22 broken syncho springs.

Has Mitsu come up with a solution to anyone's knowledge?

Someone said that there was a TSB - whatever that is - implying that Mitsu knows about the problem.

Just so everyone knows at least several guys have had their tranny fixed under warranty.

yeah alot of people have had their Trans fixed under warranty, but if your car is modded kiss the warranty good bye! The 6 spd is weaker because of the smaller gears I believe, they fit 6 gears in the space 5 are normally in. I know that most transmission builders will not attempt to rebuild them because it's a waste of time, and they will break again.

just get it replaced with a 5 spd your not missing much!! there is no use complaining about it or fighting with the dealership. I would suggest finding a used 5 spd send it to shep have him rebuild it. When you recieve it from shep remove your 6 spd, and slap in the shep 5spd. you will be very impressed!! best decision I've made and never look back! Then you can sell your still working 6 spd to another guy that's retarted enough to replace his 6 spd with another one that will break. It's just a fact of life, very few MR owners have retained their 6 spd very long.

Consider how many MR's are still on the road not totalled, and about 70% of them have issues, or have rebuilt transmissions, about 90% of modded 500+ MR's have had it replaced with 5 spds. these are estimates based on how many MR owners I've talked to that have performed the upgrade.

I am the first Evo MR owner to ever post a faulty 6th gear engagement(just look at my user ID and do the search). My 6th gear went bad at first temporarily(like 4 years ago), this was caused by improper route of the hard hallman in-cabin cable, I routed the hallman in cabin MBC cable straight above the shifting mechanism on my Evo 8 MR.

I fixed the issue mentioned above but one day during a drag race(one of my 120-140 plus passes on that car alone) my 6th gear misterioulsy and unexplicably stopped working. The thing is that I never ever in my life used the 6th gear at the drag strip due to my trap speeds being in the 110mph(always).

My 6th gear never ever worked again so basically it broke without even using it. My strongest theory was always a bent fork. I managed to outsmart the local BMW dealer by trading the car for a 07 BMW335i(2 years ago) and removing the carbon fiber sticker in the top of the shifter which happens to reveal the 6th gear. The car had the other 5 remaining gears working fine so at the end I won (I traded it in and I won).

Carlos
