Replacing Headgasket

Hello,
I am just wondering what a typical shop would charge to replace a headgasket assuming I supplied all the parts? Also when removing the head is it necessary to pull the turbo or can you just separate the exhaust manifold and sneak the head out? Thanks in advance!

you can sneak the head out with the manifold but itll be heavy *** ***....since its already heavy enough when u take it off with the intake manifold.....around here they charge 400-500$ in labor...

I have no issue pulling off the exhaust manifold but I was just wondering if its necessary to also pull the turbo? I know the intake manifold needs to be unbolted also. The shop said it would take them about 14 hours and it would cost me probably 1400 without parts. Any ideas?

I would say it should take at the max 6-7 hours for install and re-install. Did mine with a friend and it took us about 6 hours total. We took off both manifolds. If you take the exhaust manifold off the turbo is attached to it so take it off in one piece.

When I installed my o2 dump I removed my exhaust manifold. I didnt need to remove the turbo to remove the manifold. I just finagled it out. But now im not sure what to do.

Anyone local that would be interested in helping me out with this? I live in Massachusetts and would be more than willing to pay for their services. I am a hands on kinda guy but I do not feel comfortable removing the head for the first time by myself.

you should also get your head resurfaced when doing the headgasket, no point taking the chance that it isn't straight...

^That is the game plan. I dont think the head got warped because I could it right when it happened and only limped the car about a mile to the dealership. The temp gauge barely went up. Either way it will be checked. Does anyone know of a local shop or someone willing to help me with the work?

give it a try...its easy...i didnt wana take my head off cuz i had never done it...but i did it
its easier than it sounds.....you dont have to unbolt the intake mani, all i did was unbolt the braket that supports the intake mani to the block.... than just pull off the turbo to take some weight off...

im assuming you blow the head gasket and it over heated. I busted radiator and overheated. Didn't blow head gasket but messed up seals

I pulled the head in my car in about 2 hrs. I left the intake manifold in the car and pulled the exhaust manifold out with the head. Reinstallation was straightforward. We took the opportunity to replace the timing belt, tensioner, and balance belt. The timing belt took many hours!

So let me get this strait. You pulled the head while leaving the intake manifold in the car? Unfortunately im away from my car at school so I cant just open the hood and take a look. Did you leave everything bolted to the IM and simply unbolt where the runners connect to the head? As far as the exhaust manifold goes it sounds as though you left the turbo in the car and unbolted the two nuts and two bolts that connect the turbo to the manifold. Then just pulled the head out with the exhaust manifold still connected? Why not just completely unbolt the exhaust manifold? Also why is the shop telling me I need to pull my turbo to get to the head?
