shifting gears

hey....ok so i have a IX with just less than 20,000 miles on it and sometimes when i am shiftin from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd under 3000 rpms i have trouble getting it into gear. if i be realy really nice with it i an can get in to go into next gear smoth but just normal shifting it sticks and once in awhile grinds so i think somthing could/is wrong.......does anyone have an idea what to do bout it ?

pretty common problem with the MR. your synchros are going. if you are under warranty you can get them replaced most likely. my car does the same thing, it shifts ok sometimes, but i get locked out of a gear onec in a while and the rest of my shifts are usually pretty notchy.

Before assuming your synchros are going bad replace the fluid. Also, does it only happen when its really cold outside?

get the tranny up to operating temp and then figure out if you still get locked out and if you still have the heavy notchy gears.

i usto get locked out on 5th anything above 4k rpm's

get a good oil in there also will help

this is a known problem especially for 6spd owners. When my car is cold, I don't even bother trying to shift into 2nd and just skip to third. It will be notchy as hell and grind if I have to put it into 2nd. But once I get on the highway or drive for a while, the tranny will shift like butter, even 2nd gear. I was worried at first about the 2nd gear notchiness but everyone I've talked to confirmed that they have the same issue and its pretty much normal. I've also found that shifting quickly to 2nd at low rpms will go in smoother than other times so you can try that too.

guess I should have said that. check the fluids first, and if after replacing the fluids you still have a problem it's probably the synchros. Most people just kinda live with it, some get it replaced. I had my changed the fluids during my 30k service and the transmission really didnt feel any different before or after. shifts were still notchy every once in a while, but could be super smooth 2 minutes later. weird.

well i just got my car back and they said nothing is wrong with it. it was test driven and check for tranny leaks but didnt have problem driving/shifting and no leaks. so ill just see what happens with the warm weather comin so it might have been the real cold temps up here.

monkey...what did you tell them was wrong with ur car and how many miles are on it?

Grinds

ok, so someone said that there car is getting there synchros redone at the dealer?
if so please post back and tell us if its fixed. also how easily was the dealer willing to do this repair? how long did it take them to "diagnose"? how long was the car at the shop?

im asking cause my evo8 is shiftin like **** and i have to feather the clutch in any up shift..... the same way you do a 1- 2.......... its driving me nuts. I have changed out the tranny fluid with oem and its still like crap until the trans heats up "20 min" and even then any shift over 4000 grinds....

thanks

I don't have an MR, but on my 5 speed I noticed much better shifting after installing the brass shifter bushings and metal shifter base bushings, along with bg syncroshift. It was really notchy before adding those.

i run a 5spd and every morning i have problems getting it into 2nd. i usually just let the car warm up for a little longer than average in the cold mornings, although I do live in FL so its not THAT cold...

Grind

ok so is the consensus generally speaking, that until trans at complete warm operating temp, notchy and partial shift grinding is normal?

i know theres threads out there about the best fluid to use to try and protect our internals, but anyone want to chime in about there favorite trans fluids?

BUMPITY

I dont think that any grinding is normal at all IMO. I had my car fixed it took them one day to say it was a tranny problem, then they had to take it off and rip into it.
