IX MR; 2nd Gear POP OUT on decel, any ideas?
IX MR; 2nd Gear POP OUT on decel, any ideas?
I'll make it quick. I have a 2006 IX MR, I am the original owner, and have 38K on my odometer. MY question is since the day i purchased the car, my second gear CONSTANTLY pops out of gear while decellerating. It does not grind, and is otherwise flawless in shifting between gears - think buttery smooth. The only problem is that on downshifts, or not, if I am in second gear and decellerating, the gear shifter will pop out of second unless i hold the gear knob. This is no concern on normal driving, but spirited driving - in which I need to use both hands to steer- I can't always have my right hand available for holding the shifter.
Does anyone know what might be the cause of this? Like I said this tranny is perfect in terms of shifting between gears- never a problem, and I would like not to have Mitsu take apart the tranny just to fix this little problem, unless that's the only to resolve this (there is a chance that upon repairing this tranny, there is likelihood that they could mess something up and the buttery smooth shifts I have grown accustom to, will disappear). This is my daily driver.
I was thinking that a set of shifter bushings and/or new bushing for the drive line might help. I can't determine if the lash in the drivetrain is actually kicking the shifter out of gear, but can that actually happen?
I am currently running 75w-90 Royal Purple Gear Oil and have been since the car hit 13K miles. Since then I have replaced the gear oil three other times with the same fluid.
Thanks for your help.

i cant speak for certain because i have never had an evo trans apart, but i had a mustang that had the same problem and what i found was that there are 2 little plastic feelers on either end of the shift fork that actually ride on the gears themselves. on mine one of those little plastic pieces was cracked and missing a small chunk just enough to make it pop out. hope this helps.
you have the same problem as me!!! I had my buddy install a new clutch that I bought it was a 6 puck and it does stick but when I decl from 3rd to 2nd it pops out.... I want to know the same answer to his question.
you more than likely damaged the engagment teeth on that gear which would explaine the pop out situation, I would say that the trand has been damaged but you could try to adjust your shifter before you pull the trans but this is usally just a temp fix.
