But if your car ran better before you "corrected" the problem, then why not put it back the way it was?!

hahahah yes!!

He is no match for Sudo Kyochi's Mis-o-firinga Systema! Perhaps the solution here is to ditch the Evo and get a 86

This is why I always recommend doing a basic maintenance when you buy a used car, whether it is private sale or from the dealership.

As for the problem, I would start exactly where some of the other members suggested, borrow a friends coil packs and see if it runs better. If it does you found the problem. If it doesnt, deal with it then.

Is it possible that Kunal tuned the car with that plug and he compensated for the misfiring? Ultimately resulting in needing to retune?

good idea but i don't think there is any way to tune for a specific cylinder

Okay so theres a lot of advice that I have to respond to...

cfdfireman1:
When the car sputtered like that. I revved it barely just to see what the first half of the power band was like... terrible... and I could control when it backfires ("pop!") with the throttle. I did not drive it around at all, and turned it off within about 30 seconds at most each time.

monkey_187:
I unplugged the battery as I switched the plugs...

Ktk:
Its not dumb because I have terrible short term memory. Yet, I'm almost positive I got the wires and packs correctly. It goes wire on 1 <-- coil on 2 | wire on 3 <-- coil on 4. Right? .... btw I do want an 86 really badly lol. For when I move to warmer climates.

Ev0ikon:
Tried it. still sucked. its not the plugs anymore. I'm thinking wires or coil packs. hell only other things it could be...unless...

Lexat20: hey buddy. I was thinking that might be a possibility. I'm going to call Kunal and ask him today... I'm hoping I wont need a re-tune. That would be a major pain in the ***, especially since the car is not really drivable at all.

But really. I'm still just appalled at that 4th cyl plug....I can't believe this weird **** always happens to me.

BTW can somebody post up a picture their motor with no valve cover on it? I just want to double check... the paranoia has set in.

Wire on 1 goes to coil on 4. Wire on 3 goes to coil on 2.

man i swear that sounds SO like the mismatched wires issue... Do you have a service manual? I can't think of any other reason you would have such a rough running car when it was working fine before. Sparks happening at the wrong time is what will cause those big pops and backfires and such...

make 100% sure you have those dudes like this:

EDIT! I just saw you post above, I think you are defn off on your wires!

Replace all 4 with ILFR7H if you have an Evo 9. Start fresh.

Yeah... so stock plugs are NGK ILFR7H... the fourth cylinder plug is a ****ing NGK IFR6B-K plug. I am not the original owner of the car, but who the hell puts a different plug and a step hotter than stock? And doesn't even replace the other plugs either!!?

So I'm thinking, "now my car will run a lot better!"

I start it up and it starts sputtering. When I tap on the gas it pops and the car is in general running like complete crap. I double checked all the gaps and they are all within specs. Everything is perfectly hooked up, torqued down, etc... I'm thinking that the coil pack went bad all of the sudden? is there any way to check the packs or wires or anything to see what the exact problem is? I'm tired of blowing money on stuff that doesn't need to be fixed.

Any input would be greatly appreciated...
