Guess what I found while changing Spark Plugs... (look inside and help)

So I go to do change the plugs, cars running fine usually, just get a misfire code every now and then... and everything is going smooth until I find this...

Yeah... so stock plugs are NGK ILFR7H... the fourth cylinder plug is a ****ing NGK IFR6B-K plug. I am not the original owner of the car, but who the hell puts a different plug and a step hotter than stock? And doesn't even replace the other plugs either!!?

So I'm thinking, "now my car will run a lot better!"

I start it up and it starts sputtering. When I tap on the gas it pops and the car is in general running like complete crap. I double checked all the gaps and they are all within specs. Everything is perfectly hooked up, torqued down, etc... I'm thinking that the coil pack went bad all of the sudden? is there any way to check the packs or wires or anything to see what the exact problem is? I'm tired of blowing money on stuff that doesn't need to be fixed.

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

pull one wire off at a time and if it runs worse that ones good, untill you pull one and it remains the same.

I think its my first pack that isnt firing right. the intensity of the spark is a lot lower. and looking at the new plugs 1-3 cyl are really rich and the last one is normal.

Thats freakin scary!

If you have any friends with an Evo get him to swap out coils with you and see if it make a difference. Much cheaper way to find out...

Motor must have shrink your plug But at least there's no known problems due to the difference in one of the plugs. I guess the last owner don't know what he or she's doing.

Did you just let the car idle or did you drive it? I'm sure you pushed a bunch of carbon into the cylinder when you installed the longer correct plug and may need to blow it out. Let me know if you want to borrow a coil for a bit.

This might sound dumb, but I've seen it happen before. When you are putting the wires and coils back on the plugs are you 100% sure you put them back with each wire going to the correct plug? As strange as it may sound I've seen a case where the coil packs and wires were installed and everything installed and torqued and looked fine, but in actual fact the wires where mismatched and going to the wrong spark plugs!!

Weird thing is, the wire lengths allowed for it and it looked correct unless you knew offhand what the setup should look like, there would have been no way to tell. Take a quick look at the service manual, and make sure your wires aren't crossed. Dumb, I know, but it provided the exact same symptoms due to incorrect spark firing order!

that seems impossible for it to look correct

I know, but the way there are 2 dif lengths of wire coming from each pack, somehow it allows the packs to be installed and bolted down nice correctly, but the 2nd wire can be plugged into the wrong plug. I was shocked too, I had to double take to notice the subtle dif!

As ktk mentioned check the wire and see if you put them in the right way. I had it happened when I changed out wires on my civic and it sputtered like crazy. Maybe make sure they are pushed in securely. Just something to check on. Also make sure you check the wires for damage and stuff as well.

The original owner was probably trying to do a misfire mod like they had on the LanEvo in Initial D. Hope you get it sorted out.
