its the hidden button on all cars from japan where if you press it the car will make 400 miles to the tank and have 500 at the wheels

I believe it's the little breather valve on the transfer case. It can burp out a little fluid sometimes.
What's with all the coolant around it though?

Oh, that's the button for the anti-propellaristic flagellator flux capacitatorization modulator. Just kidding.

I think under that cap is a small metal cap-like piece, moves around like a small thimble or something. Not sure what it's for.

All the coolant is from me removing lines to take the intake manifold off. I did not drain the radiator first

It is part of the transfer case but, I don't see anything in my manual that shows what part it is.
