Cam gear bolt snapped...thoughts?

I was finalizing a cam swap.. I was putting torque on the main bolt that holds the cam gear to the cam...when the head snapped off. I pulled the cam and I am taking it to a machine shop to get it back out. Do you think the cam has been compromised?

What were you tightening it to? 65 ft lbs?

it shouldn't have snapped unless it was in crooked or you were using too much torque.

If they can get the rest of the bolt out, and you clean the threads with a thread chaser, the cam should be fine though.

I think I put too much torque on it because its in the cam almost the whole way.

It happened to me also, I was using a cheapo tq wrench to do the job.

Get a few replacements from mitsubishiparts.net part # MF140285

and keep some handly just in case

You're very welcome. when I was reinstalling my cams, for some reason my tq wrench was out of calibration, and here I am throwing my whole body weight into it to tighten the cam bolt...I should have realized that if I am throwing my whole body weight into it that something is wrong.

Lesson learned:

1) buy good tools
2) keep a few spare oem cam bolts lying around just in case you snap one (since I swap out my cams frequently).
