I just bought this car about 2 months ago with 15k miles on it and I never dreamed of having this problem. The Evo I had before was a '04 RS model with way more miles/ power/ and mods and never had a single problem with it. Oh well I guess, ..what do you guys suggest that I replace since im already in there fixing stuff?
most likely your engine was on its way out anyway and slamming into a rev limiter just gave it that little push over the edge. good luck with your rebuild

Maybe the rev limit hit blew the head gasket (massive detonation perhaps) and then continuing to drive it hard resulted in the spun bearing because of coolant contamination of the oil?

just buy a set of rod bearings, (maybe some new rod bolts?) drop the oil pan, unbolt the rod ends, take out the old bearings, put the new ones in and bolt everything back up. run it for a few hours and then recheck the rod bolts, make sure theyre good or retighten if you have to and then you should be done. should be less than a days work.

do it ASAP, stop driving the car now so you dont warp the journals.
HMMM, what about damage to the crank..if a bearing is bad the crank journal is also bad..., Hell I have had cranks be bent. So this isnt a fix--not trying to be a d*ck, but this wont work if its a bearing.

even if that would fix it you still have to deal with all of the bearing pieces and **** floating around through the engine. Out of curiosity is the car running meth?

not that i know anything about spun bearings... ive just ran 15psi on a 2000 celica gts, spun a bearing, and warped the other 3, did exactly what i told this guy to do and ran the car without any problems after. but yeah, it def wont work, his journals are probably destroyed and will probably need to replace them all... **** probably the crank too. yeh hes def screwed.

You killed the motor running E85?? That's kinda surprising. Did you happen to datalog the run where the motor got killed?

The motor didnt seem to have any problems after I bounced it off the 5k rev limiter that was set. I did smell coolant but we checked a couple of things and we just figured when the motor jolted like that, that some coolant came out of the overflow. We did probably 10-15 runs after that and it was fine. Then after some driving throughout the next couple of weeks there was still nothing but small coolant leaks so I just figured there was a small leak or the water pump was bad. (No overheating though) Then I was driving and I noticed a tick and a few miles later it worsened and it just continued until I got it to the shop to have it checked.

i bounce my car off the limiter all the time. everyone with a two step hits a rev limiter. its highly unlikely the rev limiter caused it, but i soppose its possible. who sets the rev limit at 5k for a base tune though? the stock tune is at 7600...

I have a two step set at 5500 rpms but the reason for the issue was the guy that was tuning my car put a base tune on it to get me home from the e-85 filling station. Then when we started tuning he forgot to raise the rev limiter back up to 7.8k so when i hit the rev limiter it was full boost and it was a really hard jolt. I dont know if that is the root to all of my problems but I know ever since I have been leaking coolant and all my problems started.

Anyway I need some suggestions on pistons, rods, and a head gasket?!?

you mean stationary rev limit or rpm limit?

My stationary rev limiter(two step) was set at 5500rpms. But my base map had a rpm limit of 5000rpms which caused a huge jolt when I hit it at 25lbs of boost running through third gear. It was an accident...the guy that was tuning my car forgot to raise it back up to 8000rpms. He had a base map on my car for tuning and it was set at 10psi max with a 5k rpm limit for safety.

A rev limit, even when set wrong, is there to protect the engine. I don't see how it would do the opposite.

Yea thats what I thought too! I dont know if there is a difference between hitting it at 8k rpms or 5k rpms. The only thing I can think is when you get to the rev limiter your normally creeping up on it at 8k but when you hit it at 5k its under full boost and climbing fast...so who knows why it happened? ****ty luck I guess.

What pistons and Rods do you guys recommend?

Well after we got the motor/tranny out of the car we found the problems. Keep in mind the problem I mentioned in the original post and look at the results...unbelievable!

Blown head gasket from the jolt and I have no idea how I spun a rod bearing but that happened too!
