Cam gear settings for a faster car? Not just more hp.
I'm about to throw some comp 272's in my car and wanted to get some feedback from you drag guys or even those who do "comparisons" with other from a roll
My car now is setup for road course stuff and response blah blah etc... Mods are:
-Stevo8 spec super savage ported IX turbo
-stevo8 spec exhaust and intake mani
-Milspec TB
-3" straight exhaust with 12" resonator
-injectors, fmic, uicp, licp etc.
The car weighs 3000lbs with 1/2 tank, makes really good power for what it is and 91oct. Last time I drag raced it it went 12.2@115.8mph on race gas with cams and stuff.
I have changed a lot of things and will be getting a 91 and e85 tune and would like to go back out to the drag strip and see what I can do. My question is this. At what point is it not worth sacrificing low end anymore? I know a lot of the hks272 guys are running -4/-1 for a pretty broad curve and +1/-1 for max response and such. I'm looking to try and get the max et and MPH out of it as I won't be going to the track(roadcourse) anytime soon and just daily drive the car now. The comp cams are very close to the hks's with the lsa being the only thing different(108 vs 110 I think).
So, stock turbo smallish cams, what should I look to do? Retard the crap out of them and get as much top end as possible? Hunt for the best curve after like 5000rpm? As much tq as possible tq as possible and short shift it? TIA for the advice.

I vaguely recall an old post by TedB wherein he states that the timing on the Comp Cams camshafts is totally different than the timing on the HKS's due to the different LSA's. Whereas, the advanced settings such as, +2/0, +1/-1, may work well on the HKS cams, they should be avoided on the Comp Cams grinds.
The Comp Cams cams are already more midrange torque and response oriented in the straight-up, 0/0 setting than the HKS's are. If I remember correctly he said to try 0/0 on smaller turbos and maybe -3/-2 on larger turbos.
I'll try to hunt down the pertinent thread for you.

If it was me looking for topend power, I would start with some retarded settings such as, -2/-2, -2/-3, or, -3/-2 first. Good Luck!
