Galant VR4 build thoughts.
Galant VR4 build thoughts.
I have been lurking here for a couple years. I see alot of new stuff and rear some very interesting things. It seems this place is far more advanced than any forum I have been on which is why I am asking this question here. Yes I know this is an EVO forum but we do share the same platform and alot of the guys here used to be 1g/2g owners. With that being said, Id like to get some opinions/thoughts on what I am doing.
I have been in the DSM scene for about 5 years now. I know may way pretty well around these cars. I am looking for other peoples opinions on what I am doing. The goal is 350-400hp at the crank, obviously the higher the better. Once I get that far, I will be hitting the track and getting this car figured out to run some low low low 12s. If I cant run mid/low 12s with this HP goal, well then.... well there is no reason for it. Yes I can drive.
So here is the setup:
-91 Galant VR4 6bolt
-Stock bottom end w/ arp rod bolts, acl tri metal bearings, OEM piston rings
-AMS race style balance shaft
-2G head with +1mm OS SS valves, minor port work to take lip out of seat, port matched intake/exhaust runners, BC 272 cams, BC springs/retainers, supertech bronze valve guides, 3G lifters, head shaved to spec limit, ARP head studs
-16G turbo clocked, some port work on compressor outlet, 7cm hotside port matched, OEM 2G exh manifold hogged out, tubular O2 housing, flapper removed for a tial 38mm wastegate open dump, 2.5" downpipe, 3" exhaust, no cat.
-OEM 2G intake manifold, port matched, plenum size increased, 1G TB, EGR delete
-EBAY FMIC 29x12x3, aluminum 2.5" piping, Greddy Type RS BOV
-GM MAFT, Keydriver stage 3 chip, SAFC II, Innovate wideband O2
-Walbro 255HP fuel pump, EVO8 injectors, Aeromotive FPR
-Economy re-build transmission, double synchro 2nd gear, VR4 1st gear, ACT 2600 w/ 6puck sprung clutch, stock flywheel, SS clutch line
-Other stuff: new bushings, ball joints, manual steering rack, 4ws delete, AC delete, emissions delete, rust/weight reduction, new timing belt stuff, blah blah blah...
Im sure I am forgetting a few other things but you get the idea. My next couple thing I plan to pick up are 1000cc injectors along with ECMlink. I plan to run 22-25psi on this turbo. Here are a few pics of last years setup and the new parts. Look forward to getting peoples feedback.

Have you thought about running a 50 trim, possibly E85, with dsmlink? You should probably look into some good forged pistons for sure, if you are going to build it up. Should definitely get you the desired power.
There are a couple of guys on 4g61t.org, with Mirage turbo hatchbacks, running a 50 trim with E85 on their 1.6l. Making very good e.t.'s
I plan on running an FP Green setup, with E85, dsmchips.com stage 3 chip, SAFC, and 1150cc injectors on my 2.0 6bolt that I am swapping into my Mirage Turbo hatchback.

To be honest, I dont want to change the turbo yet. I see way to many people making low 300hp on 50 trim, 57trim, t3/t4, etc. and I say to myself, I can make that on a 16g. Id like to replace the turbo when its a restrictive point. But yes, Id love to swap the turbo out but not just yet. Swapping the turbo will make it easier for my goal but who said this was supposed to be easy? I will run E85 (assuming I can get a safe tune on it with what I have) but I would like to stay on pump and see what I can crank out of what I have right now. I didnt go a forged rotating assembly yet because thats a whole other budget I would be working against. Parts, machine work, etc. I wouldnt call this a build but... eh. More of a freshining up. Ive only had this car a year and bought it bone stock.
FYI, dsmlink is no more. You can still get it used but they have now switched over to ECMlink. Look into it if you havent heard of the change over.

Yeah, there is good power to be made with the 16g. I was just tossing the idea of the 50 trim. I too have heard of people making low numbers with 50 trims, but also have heard, and seen vids of people running in the 11s with them too. All depends on the tune and part combo I guess.
I hear where you are coming from about the budget thing.
And I did not know about dsmlink, I will have to look into it.
Anywho, get some more pics of that Galant up man. I have always wanted one, but just cant find any around here that are worth buying, that isn't over priced.
