Question Transmission swap?

I am thinking of replacing my transmission and am wondering how hard it would be to put a 6- speed mr tranny into an 03 evo viii gsr.

is a different transfercase also needed?

or would a straight up rebuild be much easier?

and do the rear end gears have to be changed to accomadated the gear ratios?

i would really like to have the 6- speed set up! I need advise please. thank you

And who is this "from what I heard"? Let me guess.. a lot of ppl..

Not everybody hits the 1/4 mile every weekend bud. Vast majority want a 5spd because of the shorter gearing and bigger 4th gear.

The 6spd is the best DD tranny.. IMO and pushing around 400AWHP and 370TQ on the street is more than enough to drive on public roads. The flaw comes in the 6spd as used the same housing as they did on the 5spd. So imagine squeezing 6 gears in a space designed for 5.. this in turn has caused issues on 4th gear as it is a lot smaller and therefore heat dissipation is slower causing it to fail in high horsepower apps as many things occur inside as temps rise.

You will need the following to complete the swap.

6 speed trans
Top trans mount
6 speed shifter with base and shifter cables and shift knob
6 speed reverse and speedo harness
6 speed center shifter console

Swapping to the 6 speed is a great idea. I loved mine much more then the 5 speed until my 4th gear let go.. I made over 300 11 and 12 second 1/4 passes on that trans and it never skipped a beat. Perfect gear ratio for the street and it shifted like butter.

I have all the parts needed for the swap if you are seriously interested.

I'd keep the 5 speed, my friend has a 6 and he's going to the 5 speed. If you want to swap transmissions go with the Shepherd transmission. I did and I absolutely love it! It is so damn smooth compared to my stock trans.

It's a simple question of what type of driving do you really do and the gear ratios you find best for your application. Be honest with yourself. If you road race and/or drag, then IMO it would be best to get the opinion of the guys at Shepherd and the ones who have been campaigning the EVO for quite some time and ask for their input(s).

Swap in the 6-speed if you just want the benefit of long gears for highway cruising, and weigh out if it is better to invest in your 5-speed, leave it alone or take the money and put it someplace else.

Ok, I love to run up in the canyons, and im trying to build a track/street car. so ur sayin the 5 speed is the better way to go for that then? and i really need a rebuild and am tryin to get info on wether or not i can do it myself and how expensive it is, and if not how expensive is it to get done, how to find a place that does good work, cause im the type that doesnt trust a lotta repair shops, and i know that the dealer is gunna be mad expensive! dont wanna go there really.

Depends how much of it you want. Trans is perfect other then the 4th gear and the 4th gear on the main shaft. I have it apart and have picures of everything. I also have everything needed to do the swap. I can let it all go pretty cheap but shipping will not be cheap for the trans.
