Vishnu Cam Gears
Just got in my Vishnu Cam Gears and need a little help. The install is very straight forward but I need a Mitsubishi Special Tool MD998738. Of course I called my local Mitsubishi dealership, Barrett Mitsubishi, and they told me it is against there policy to sell Mitsubishi tools to customers. When I asked why I got the straight answer, "Well because if we sold you the tools you could fix it yourself." Well that was an honest answer... I called Town North Mitsubishi and they too subscribe to this "policy". So does anybody know where I can get Mitsubishi Special Tools? I have tried Snap-On for an equivalent tool and they could seem to find one. Matco was closed when I called. I also put in a call to Mitsubishiparts.net and they will let me know tomorrow.
Anyway here is a picture:

What is the tool for?
I don't see where you would need a special tool for the job is why I ask.
In general, dealers don't sell special tools to customers and I actually think it is a manufacturer's policy. We never sold any at Saturn and they are kind of a PIA to get ordered in. IF you know who makes it you can sometimes go direct. For example, OTC and Kent-Moore are big in the business and I think they both have websites. You may be able to buy direct from them.

The tool is to compress the timing belt tensioner. Go to www.vfaq.com they show you how to build one.

timzcat, you need the tool to release tension on the cam tensioner so you don't have to remove the cover on the lower cam timing belt to access the cam tensioner directly. This saves you about 2hrs or so.
wreckleford, thanks for the heads-up. Still would prefer to buy one but that might be what I have to do.
Cheers,
Bill

You don't need any special tools to pull the cams and gears off. Just put on a new tensioner.

Installed the cam gear and it was a snap. The special tool really made the job easy. Only have to remove 7 bolts to complete the job. Anyway, I will be getting my XEDE next week and Shiv will be tuning my car Oct 11th so hopefully everything will go as smoothy.
QuantumEVO, messing with the tensioner would have added a lot of time to the install. With the tool it was a 45min job and I didn't have to remove anything but the upper timing belt cover.

I guess it depends on what all you are installing. I take it you only did cam gears?

Sorry guys not trying to keep you in suspense but I will not get to really test it out until next week. Unfortunaley I'm really busy with some other projects. One thing I did notice is it sounds a little different at idle, maybe like 264 cams but a little more subtle.
Anyway I will have it on the dyno next Saturday so expect a full report next weekend.
Here is a pic of them installed. Too bad I have to put the cover on.
