Josh:

thanks, very informative stuff.

If you want, I could take pics of the things you mentioned. Just tell me where to find them.

Will check out my injectors and do the fuel pump test.

how can I fond out the size of the turbo? All i see is TD05H.

Pls check my thread, "EVO2 from Japan, pls check mods" for a list and pics of suspected mods.

I really appreciate your help as I am totally clueless with this car.

From what I have seen, a TD05 is either a 14b, a small 16g, a large 16g, or in SOME cases, a 20g. MOst 20g's ate TD06 from what I recall.

Since the Evo has only came with the 16G, it is either a large or a small 16G. One way of telling would be to take the turbo off from the exhaust manifold. Once you ahve it removed, measure the hole that runs between the manifold and the turbo. If it is 6cm wide, it is a small 16G. If it is 7cm wide, it is a large 16G.

Injectors:

Ok, in the picture that I have posted, look at the drawn in yello part. The long straight line will be where your fuel rail is. Your injectors will be mounted on your fuel rail. The 4 lines that go toward the valve cover are to simulate the injector placement. On these 4 injectors, you will have an electrical plug hooking to each one. The portion of the injector that the plug hooks to and everything above that and toward the fuel rail will be colored. The bottom part of the mwill be black. If the top is yellow, they are 520cc. If it is blue, they are 450cc. This is a color coding method that Denso used, which is the company that supplies the OEM injectors. Most aftermarket injectors are black on top and bottom, possibly gray. Also look at the picture at where I have circled the intake manifold in green. On your car, does your manifold say CYCLONE? Just curious. If so, you might have a really cool setup that I will get in to later on.

Oh, and I know my picture is junky. That was taken about a year ago, when I still had the car. It also has a T28 turbo on it because I was dicking around and playing with various turbo setups.

I took the picture from my Yahoo screenname briefcase, because I am not on my computer right now, and that is the only way I could find a picture of an early 4G63 to show you how it looks.

If you use Yahoo, you can add the screenname that is printed across the center of the picture and we could talk there, going into better detail about all of this stuff. You can also check out some pictures of my Evo and a few cars that I had before the Evo (GSX, rock crawling Jeep, slow *** Integra).

Hope this helps,

Josh

just checked the injectors, they are yellow. Also, there is no cyclone written. what does cyclone stand for?

The Cyclone intake is sought after because it has dual runners going to each cylinder. When it is at low RPM, only 1 runner is open for each cylinder, This helps improve low end torque and turbo spool up. When you hit higher rpm/full boost, it opens butterfly valves (essentially like a second throttle body) and it allows even higher air flow to get fed into the cylinders. Pretty cool, harder to tune because it is just one more way for massive amounts of air to get forced in to the engine an a short period of time.

P.S. You have 520cc injectors. They will support a big 16G turbo just fine. If you have the ability to datalog, check the duty cycle of these injectors under full boost. Make sure to keep the duty cycle under 85%. Any more than that and you are overdriving your injectors.

I'm surprised because we get RON 98 petrol here in Singapore and all the Evo 8s are running 1.3 bar (18.85 psi) held in the 5th and 6th, peaking at 1.5 bar (21.75 psi). When I had my Evo 7 my stock boost was 1.1 bar (15.95 psi) held.

Our jdm Evo 7s make 1.1 to 1.3bar of boost on 95RON gas.

I should really fit a boost guage......

after installing a boost gauge this morning, I was pleased to find that my evo hits a whopping 16 psi and then settles down to 15. now I finally know why this car feels like a slug.

98 octane non-US (RON method) will likely be closer to 91 octane using the R+M/2 method. Example:

98 RON + 84 MON / 2 = 91 PON (pump octane number, the result of the R+M/2 method of averaging RON and MON octane ratings)
Just to clarify, I found this website:
http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/R...RONMONPON.html

98RON = 94 Octane
100RON = 98.5 Octane
95RON = 91 Octane

I'd appreciate if others post a similar website, because the one above doesn't give a "100% sure factor".
