Hey ya'll,

I recently bought a spare block and will be building it slowly when I can afford parts.

I was wondering what is the best way to store a 4g63 block to keep it from rusting?

I have an engine stand and was thinking I'd prolly just keep it on that and cover it with fresh engine oil every week or so and also keep it covered up with a trash bag.

do ya'll think tha'd be good? If ya'll have a better way please share!!! I'll do about anything to keep it from rusting

I have always been told to cover it in a LIGHT coat of oil on the unpainted surfaces that would be exposed to the elements. The painted surfaces normally wont rust. And instead of using a trash bag... that will lock in the extra moisture, use old clothes or rags.

I agree with the light oil, and to avoid trash bags. Also go to a local sporting goods store, and go to the firearm section. They sell dehumidifying elements for gun safes that keep the moisture away from metal. This would definatley help depending on where you have it stored (if in a closed off space or you have it bagged in one way or another). Also don't store it in a really damp area. If it's in a basement or the like, you may want to invest in a good dehumidifier.

 

WD-40 and a trash bag, but not sealed off. The bag is more to keep junk from falling down the various holes, ports, etc... You could wipe it down with grease and shelve it and probably be fine.

there is no rocket science here, esp if its something you plan to build later. If its already built, I would seal it in a trash bag or two after coating it with oil and tossing in some desicant packets. You don't want dust or dirt or whatever else that can make it through rags, etc. The built bottom end for my volvo has been bagged for about a month and a half now, and its fine. I check it every couple of weeks, but haven't had to add any extra oil anywhere.

^^^ will that work well on the cylinder walls as well? of curse that is what I'm most paranoid about getting rust one............even though I'll prolly bore it out .020 anyway lol....just don't want any rust on it

 

cosmoline is basically just a spray on oily wax
we use it all the time on raw metal parts we put outside that we dont want to rust.
takes a while to get off but if you hot tank the block when you are ready to machine , no problems.

 

wd-40 on metal works great blocks rust or eats it.

 

Do not use wd-40 it only displaces moisture for a short time only!!

Use LPS #3 that is a long term rust inhibitor, it turns into a nice wax like coating. I use it to spray bare metal that will be shipped over seas. It is good for 2 years plus in protection at very least.

 

Id coat in oil lightly and then plug off all holes/ports with clean shop rags. if u have an engine stand like u said, id use it too

 

cosmoline is what you find coating a lot of vintage military surplus guns that have never been fired/assembled....keeps them away from the rust, I figure it'd do well with your block as well. GL!

Go to your local auto parts store and look for something called fogging oil.

 

Do you have a fastenal or grainger around you? They will have it.
