What is the best oil filter sandwich adapter for EVO?

I just moved my oil temperature sensor from my drain plug to a sandwich adapter on the filter. The adapter is made by Greddy. Now with the adapter in, the oil filter is hanging pretty low. Looking at it, it looks like it's within 1/4" of the lowest point under the car, which is my sway bar. I am paranoid that if I scrape something, the filter could be knocked off or bust open, and bye bye engine. Does anyone know of an oil filter sandwich adapter that is thinner, therefore will not have this problem?

How low is your friend's oil filter compared to the bottom of the oil pan? My filter is lower than the oil pan. I am using one of the "large" filters, Purolator PL14459. I was told the larger filter provides less restriction to the oil flow. I used to use the smaller STP S6607, but I don't want to go back to it.

I run a Greddy Sandwich and a AMSoil filter.

Greddy is the sandwich that I currently have, and it's making my filter hang too low. I could solve the problem by getting a smaller filter, but I don't want to compromise on the filter.

The stock filter is shorter--.. Check you sway bar, any damage? You said it hung lower--if not and you dont off road, you will be fine if it got you this far.

Then don't get a sandwich adapter if your paranoid???

It happened to a guy i know. Hit a pothole ripped the thing right off.

I had the bolt that holds the adapter on back out and fall off, which in turn all my oil was lost and that lead up to me spinning a bearing a few months later due to the damaged that happened during this incident.

Use the stock holes for any gauges you might want.

Are there stock holes already there for accepting sensors? I didn't realize that. But one thing that would be a problem for me is that the sensor I have is tapered, and any hole I screw it into will get slightly rethreaded. I don't want to do that to a permanent part of the car, so that's another reason to stick with a sandwich. My sway bar isn't damaged, but there is a small scrape on my downpipe, which is almost as low as the sway bar. No idea how that happened, maybe it was just the way the chassis bounced over a particular bump. I'll have to look into the stock filter, which I assume you mean the one from a Mitsu dealer. I hate to go that way though, because I just bought a bunch of Purolators on sale at Bi-Mart.

So to make me happy as a clam, I'd like someone to tell me if they have a sandwich adapter that does not make the oil filter hang too low.

Josh, that must have ruined your day, having the sandwich fall off and losing all your oil. Did you know when it happened right away, so you could kill the engine? Or did you end up letting it run until it seized?

It ruined my night. I knew exactly when it fell off cause the gauges went crazy....well that the the wires that went to the sensors were still connected to the adapter and it was skipping off the ground and hitting the bottom of my car. I shut it down after about 200 ft. But the damage was done. The adapter skipped off the ground and broke the threads to the oil adapter housing so that cost me $300 to get fixed. The shop put new oil in and then she started right up. They changed the oil and then cut the filter open and found nothing but metal shavings. motor lasted another month until she spun a bearing. 15K later I have a nice 2.3 GT4088.

dang, u are describing my worst (or one of my worst) nightmares. Now I am going to be reaching under my car and giving the filter a little twist to make sure it's tight every day!

Here's how I wired my Defi oil temp. sensor.
I used the capped off plug which is on the oil filter housing manifold. You're going to need a 8mm hex driver to break off the plug. It has factory sealant on it so it's on their tight, FYI.

The Defi temp sensor is 1/8 NPT, so I used this adapter from 42 Draft Designs

This adaptor piece will allow the use NPT with BSPT.

Here's a pic of where I put the adapter piece.

No need to use a silly adaptor plate and risk your engine.

cool, thanks for the info! I have the Greddy adapter with a Purolator PL14459 filter. I think the Purolator is nearly identical in size with the stock filter. Does your filter look like it hangs kind of low? I've already put in my order with 42 Draft Designs for the adapter to go in the oil manifold bung, as shown in whoang40's pic. The Greddy may be fine, but I'd rather have the peace of mind.

ok, a little update here. I've ordered the bung adapter for the stock sensor port located in the oil manifold from 42 Draft Designs. They've given me a tracking number, and it should arrive by Thursday or Friday, if USPS Priority Mail works the way it usually does. In the mean time, I've been reaching under the car and testing the oil filter for tightness every day It seems to be staying put, with no looseness at all (at least tight enough that I can't turn it). This means the sandwich adapter is also tight. I put it on there pretty good, giving the wrench a real hard turn. But I notice a little problem, which I've seen someone else report for the ProSport sandwich adapter. I have the Greddy one.

There is a little oil drop that forms on the oil filter, and I notice oil stains on the side of the filter from leaking oil. The oil never drips, even overnight, and there is no puddle on my garage floor. So I think the leak only happens when the oil is under pressure, while I'm driving. Not enough oil has leaked for me to see a difference on the dipstick, so It's probably not a big deal. But I'll be glad to finally get rid of the sandwich when the bung adapter arrives!
